Yaroslav Askarov requests a trade, and the Seattle Kraken emerge as a possible landing spot. Would the Kraken part with Shane Wright to acquire the talented goalie?

The hockey world is abuzz with the latest trade rumors surrounding Nashville Predators goaltender Yaroslav Askarov. NHL insider Kevin Weekes has reported that Askarov has informed the Predators he will not report to the AHL this season and has requested a trade.

While Predators general manager Barry Trotz maintains the expectation for Askarov to report to training camp, the writing seems to be on the wall.

Askarov, a highly touted prospect drafted 11th overall in 2020, has been linked to the Montreal Canadiens. However, another team has reportedly entered the fray: the Seattle Kraken. Rumors suggest the Kraken have expressed interest in acquiring Askarov, but the asking price is steep – young forward Shane Wright.

The Kraken’s Interest and the Potential Price Tag: Is Shane Wright on the Move?

From a Kraken perspective, the interest in Askarov is understandable. Goaltending remains an area where the Kraken could seek an upgrade. Askarov, with his pedigree and potential, could be the long-term solution they’re looking for between the pipes.

However, the rumored asking price of Shane Wright raises significant questions. Wright, the fourth overall pick in the 2022 NHL Draft, is considered a cornerstone of the Kraken’s future. Parting ways with such a promising young talent for a goaltender, even one as promising as Askarov, is a gamble.

If I were the Kraken, I’d proceed with caution. Askarov’s talent is undeniable, but so is Wright’s. Weighing the potential reward against the risk of losing a franchise player is a delicate balancing act. The Kraken’s front office will need to meticulously evaluate whether acquiring Askarov justifies sacrificing a key piece of their future.

The Askarov trade saga is far from over. As training camp approaches, the pressure will mount on the Predators to find a suitable trade partner. Whether the Kraken ultimately pull the trigger on a deal remains to be seen.
