As the Christmas trade freeze approaches, the Anaheim Ducks find themselves in a pivotal position regarding their starting goaltender, John Gibson. NHL Insider Pierre LeBrun recently shed light on this potential move during his appearance on TSN, providing valuable insights into the Ducks’ strategy and possible destinations for Gibson.
LeBrun stated, “The Ducks have been open to moving him, but also, John Gibson and his agent have been open to that too.” This mutual openness underscores the Ducks’ readiness to explore trade options, especially if it means retaining valuable salary cap space. “I think the Ducks are now ready to eat and retain salary in a John Gibson trade,” LeBrun added, highlighting the organization’s proactive stance in managing their financial commitments.
Potential Trade Destinations: Colorado Avalanche and Carolina Hurricanes
LeBrun identified two teams that could be seriously interested in acquiring John Gibson: the Colorado Avalanche and the Carolina Hurricanes. Both franchises are in critical need of goaltending solutions to bolster their playoff aspirations.
Why the Avalanche?
The Colorado Avalanche currently ranks 30th in the league in goals against, a statistic that speaks volumes about their defensive struggles. While Avalanche management has traditionally been hesitant about heavy investments in goaltending, the dire need for a reliable netminder could make John Gibson an ideal fit. “The Colorado Avalanche management insists, for better or for worse, they’re not goalie hunting. So that’s probably an X when it comes to a possibility for John Gibson, who I think would be perfect there,” LeBrun explained. Despite their usual restraint, the Avalanche’s pressing need for a top-tier goalie might override their typical caution.
Why the Hurricanes?
On the other hand, the Carolina Hurricanes have expressed clear interest in John Gibson. “I know for a fact that John Gibson is on their radar list. Doesn’t mean necessarily they’ll pick up the phone, but he’s a name they’ve bandied about,” LeBrun noted. The Hurricanes present a compelling scenario where Gibson could thrive. If traded as a $4 million goalie instead of his current $6.4 million contract, the Ducks would only need to retain $2.4 million, making the deal financially attractive. “I’m telling you that guy is going to find his A-game again on a contender,” LeBrun confidently stated, emphasizing the potential upside for both Gibson and the Hurricanes.
