Adam Fantilli is pictured in a Philadelphia Flyers home uniform as speculation grows that Philadelphia could target the Columbus Blue Jackets center if Anaheim matches the Leo Carlsson offer sheet.

The Philadelphia Flyers’ historic offer sheet for Leo Carlsson could have consequences reaching far beyond Anaheim. If the Ducks match Philadelphia’s five-year, $90-million contract, Flyers general manager Daniel Brière would retain his four first-round draft picks and could immediately turn his attention toward Columbus Blue Jackets center Adam Fantilli.

That possibility has quickly become one of the NHL’s most intriguing offseason rumors. Fantilli is a 21-year-old restricted free agent, is eligible to sign an offer sheet and fills the same organizational need Philadelphia attempted to address by targeting Carlsson: a potential franchise center capable of growing alongside Matvei Michkov.

There is no confirmed report that Philadelphia has contacted Fantilli’s representatives or prepared a second offer sheet. The rumor is currently based on informed speculation about what Brière could do if Anaheim blocks his attempt to acquire Carlsson. However, once a general manager demonstrates a willingness to spend $18 million annually and sacrifice four first-round selections for a young center, every comparable unsigned RFA must be considered a potential target.

For Columbus general manager Don Waddell, that possibility creates another uncomfortable contract negotiation during an already complicated offseason.

How the Leo Carlsson Offer Sheet Changes Adam Fantilli’s Blue Jackets Contract

Fantilli was already positioned to receive a significant raise before Philadelphia disrupted the RFA market. The third-overall selection in the 2023 NHL Draft recorded 24 goals and 35 assists for 59 points while appearing in all 82 games during the 2025-26 season. He has accumulated 67 goals and 140 points through his first 213 NHL games.

Those numbers do not place Fantilli among the NHL’s elite centers yet, but teams do not pay young restricted free agents solely for past production. They pay for projected prime years, position scarcity and the possibility of obtaining a player before he reaches his ceiling.

Fantilli possesses the size, speed and aggressive north-south playing style teams covet in a top-line center. He can transport the puck through the neutral zone, attack defenders off the rush and create offense around the net. In my view, his overall game still needs refinement, particularly when controlling the pace against established top lines, but the raw ingredients of a long-term No. 1 center are clearly present.

Before the Carlsson offer sheet, public contract projections generally placed Fantilli somewhere between a shorter bridge contract worth approximately $6.4 million annually and a long-term agreement in the $8 million-to-$10 million range. Carlsson’s $18-million offer does not suddenly make Fantilli an $18-million player, but it gives his representatives a powerful new negotiating weapon.

The argument from Fantilli’s camp can now be straightforward: if the Flyers value a 21-year-old center with Carlsson’s production at $18 million per season, why should Fantilli accept a long-term contract worth roughly half that amount?

That does not mean Columbus must accept the comparison. Carlsson produced 67 points in 70 regular-season games last season and added 11 points in 12 playoff appearances. Fantilli finished with 59 points in 82 games. Carlsson’s immediate offensive ceiling appears higher, but the gap between the two players is not large enough for Waddell to ignore the precedent Philadelphia has created.

Would the Columbus Blue Jackets Match a Flyers Offer Sheet?

Everything coming from the Columbus Blue Jackets suggests they would match.

Waddell recently said the Blue Jackets were prepared to match anything offered to Fantilli and the team’s other restricted free agents. That is an important public declaration because it tells rival teams that an offer sheet would probably create a more expensive contract for Columbus rather than deliver the player.

The salary-cap numbers support Waddell’s position. PuckPedia currently lists Columbus with approximately $21.46 million in projected cap space under the $104-million ceiling. Philadelphia is listed with approximately $29.57 million in projected room, giving both organizations enough flexibility to participate in a high-stakes contract battle.

$11.9 million$9.56 millionTwo firsts, one second, one thirdSignificant
$12 million$9.46 millionFour first-round picksSignificant
$15 million$6.46 millionFour first-round picksSevere
$18 million$3.46 millionFour first-round picksExtreme

Calculations subtract the hypothetical contract from Columbus’ currently listed $21.46 million in projected cap space. The model does not account for future trades, demotions, injuries or additional signings.

The 2026 offer-sheet threshold becomes especially important at $11,939,166. An offer above that figure would require Philadelphia to surrender four first-round selections if Columbus declined to match. An offer between $9,551,332 and $11,939,166 would carry compensation of two first-round picks, one second-round pick and one third-round pick.

This is where the Flyers would face a strategic dilemma. An offer around $10 million would be lucrative for Fantilli, but Columbus could match it comfortably. Philadelphia would probably have to approach $15 million, or potentially revisit Carlsson’s $18-million figure, to create genuine pressure.

Even then, the Blue Jackets could fit the contract under their current cap projection. Columbus might dislike the price, but allowing a potential franchise center to leave at 21 years old would be extremely difficult to justify, particularly after six consecutive seasons outside the playoffs.

Why Fantilli Still Makes Sense for the Philadelphia Flyers

Philadelphia’s interest would be understandable. The Flyers have young wingers, developing defensemen and increasing financial flexibility, but their long-term center hierarchy remains uncertain. Pairing Fantilli with Michkov could give Philadelphia two foundational offensive players entering their prime at approximately the same time.

Fantilli would also bring a different style than Carlsson. Carlsson is more deceptive and cerebral with the puck, while Fantilli plays with greater straight-line power and physical urgency. His ability to drive through defenders and attack the interior of the ice could complement Michkov’s creativity.

My read is that the Flyers would investigate Fantilli if Anaheim matches the Carlsson offer sheet, but an actual offer remains less likely than the early speculation suggests. Philadelphia targeted Carlsson because the organization apparently believes he can become one of the NHL’s best players. We cannot automatically assume Brière places the same valuation on Fantilli simply because both are young centers from the 2023 draft class.

The bigger impact may be felt at the negotiating table in Columbus. Even without signing an offer sheet, Fantilli can use Philadelphia’s aggression as leverage. A contract that might have cost the Blue Jackets $8 million or $9 million annually could now move closer to $10 million, particularly if Fantilli agrees to surrender several unrestricted-free-agent years.

That is the real danger for Columbus. The Flyers may never acquire Fantilli, but their Carlsson offer sheet could still cost the Blue Jackets millions of dollars.
