The Winnipeg Jets have been one of the NHL’s best teams this season, currently sitting atop the Western Conference standings. However, a recent injury to their captain, Adam Lowry, has thrown a wrench into their plans. Lowry is expected to be out week-to-week with an upper-body injury, leaving a hole at the center position on their second line alongside Nikolaj Ehlers and Alex Iafallo.
Why the Winnipeg Jets Should Target Trent Frederic
This injury has sparked rumors about potential trade targets for the Jets, and one name that keeps popping up is Boston Bruins forward Trent Frederic. Sportsnet Jets insider Jacob Stoller believes Frederic is the perfect fit for Winnipeg.
“Frederic’s style of play embodies exactly what the Jets try to be,” Stoller said. “His combination of size, forechecking ability, and toughness would be a huge asset in the playoffs, especially alongside Ehlers and Iafallo on the second line until Lowry is back in the lineup.” Frederic would then shift to the 3rd line center role.
Frederic, a 26-year-old center, is known for his physical play and strong work ethic. He has 14 points (7 goals, 7 assists) in 47 games this season, but his value goes beyond his point totals. He can win board battles, play with an edge, and be a difference-maker in the playoffs.
The Bruins, on the other hand, are in a bit of a retool mode. They are currently outside the playoff picture in the Eastern Conference and may be open to moving some pieces for future assets. Frederic could be a valuable trade chip for them, and the Jets seem like a logical landing spot.
Of course, there are still some hurdles that need to be cleared before a trade can happen. The Bruins will likely want a decent return for Frederic, and the Jets will need to be willing to give it up. But if both teams are on the same page, a trade could be beneficial for both sides.
