If you’re watching the Calgary Flames this season, you know it’s been a tough ride. The losses are piling up, and the path back to contention looks long. But amid that struggle, one player is shining brighter than the rest, and it’s forcing the entire organization into a difficult conversation. That player is Nazem Kadri.
Let’s be clear: Kadri isn’t just “good for a bad team.” He’s performing like a premier play-driving center, full stop. Leading the Flames with 11 points in 17 games is just scratching the surface. As someone who digs deep into the numbers, I’m telling you, his underlying analytics are the real reason GMs around the league are picking up the phone.
Beyond the Scoreboard: The Advanced Stats Making Nazem Kadri a Contender’s Dream
When I evaluate a player for trade value, especially a veteran, I look past the basic points. I want to know: does he drive the play, or is he a passenger?
Kadri is unequivocally in the driver’s seat. His metrics for controlled zone entries are elite. That means he isn’t just dumping the puck in; he’s carrying it over the blue line with possession, which is the single most important precursor to a scoring chance. And once he’s in the zone? He’s a machine. His stats for “cycling scoring chances” and “successful offensive zone passes” are through the roof, backed by elite offensive zone possession time.
This isn’t a guy floating on the perimeter. He’s the engine of his line, and he’s logging heavy minutes to prove it. For a contending team looking for a battle-tested center who can tilt the ice for a deep playoff run, Kadri is the perfect missing piece.
The Market Heats Up: Who’s Calling on Kadri?
So, who’s in the mix? The Vancouver Canucks and Montreal Canadiens are the obvious front-runners, and for good reason: neither club is on his 13-team no-trade list, making a deal infinitely simpler.
From my perspective, Montreal is a fascinating fit. They are looking to be Stanley Cup contenders but looking to accelerate, and they desperately need a veteran center to insulate their young core. They have the exact mix of prospects and picks that would entice the Calgary Flames to part with a player of Kadri’s caliber. The Detroit Red Wings are another team to watch. They invested in 21-year-old Marco Kasper, but the results have been underwhelming. Kadri provides the immediate, high-impact offense and veteran presence they’re sorely lacking down the middle.
The bitter pill for Calgary is that both Flames ownership and Kadri himself want this to work. He loves the city and wants to win there. But the cold, hard reality of the NHL is that the more this team struggles, the more untenable it becomes to hold onto your most valuable, tradable asset. His value may never be higher, and a rebuilding team must capitalize on that.

I think offers from other GM’s who badly want him are pretty meh. GM’s like to throw anchors not life preservers. Edwards knows the quality of offers Conroy has been getting for Kadri & I think Edwards said that just to help Conroy out. At least thats what most of us Flames fans are praying for or else we’re hooped.
