NHL trade rumors for May 17, 2022 feature offseason moves the Toronto Maple Leafs could make. Will Alex Kerfoot and Justin Holl be traded?

The Toronto Maple Leafs and their fans are disappointed after not being able to close out another series with being up three games to two against the Tampa Bay Lightning.

But this year does seem different for Leaf fans. They lost to the two time Stanley Cup champion and it is likely the team will not be blown up, they will loose players to free agency because of the NHL salary cap. But don’t expect William Nylander to be traded.

Here is a list of their free agents:

Leafs Unrestricted Free Agents

  • G Jack Campbell
  • F Ilya Mikheyev
  • F Jason Spezza
  • F Colin Blackwell
  • D Mark Giordano
  • D Ilya Lyubushkin.

Leafs Restricted Free Agents

  • F Ondrej Kase
  • F Pierre Engvall
  • D Rasmus Sandin
  • D Timothy Liljegren.

In order for the Leafs to re-sign some of the important free agents they will need to free up some Leafs salary cap space.

Terry Koshan of the Toronto Sun states the Maple Leafs should look at trading Alex Kerfoot and Justin Holl. GM Kyle Dubas also must find a way to get out from under Petr Mrazek’s contract, which calls for an AAV of $3.8 million in the next two seasons.

Koshan also went on to say the Leafs priority No. 1 should be re-signing Jack Campbell, who will be due a significant raise from his AAV of $1.65 million US.

He also believes Ilya Mikheyev will be lost to free agency and the Leafs SHOULD NOT trade William Nylander.
