NHL insider Chris Johnston suggests Elias Pettersson may be easier to trade than J.T. Miller.

The Vancouver Canucks are finding themselves in a familiar position: mired in mediocrity and swirling with trade rumors. After a promising start to the season, the team has stumbled, clinging to the final Wild Card spot with just three wins in their last ten games. Adding fuel to the fire, insider Chris Johnston recently suggested that two of the team’s stars, Elias Pettersson and J.T. Miller, could be on the move.

Canucks Trade Rumors Swirling Amidst Recent Struggles

Johnston, speaking on TSN radio, confirmed that Canucks GM Patrik Allvin is actively listening to offers on both players. However, he believes that Pettersson may be the easier player to move. This is due to the nature of their respective contracts; Pettersson’s no-movement clause (NMC) doesn’t kick in until July 1, 2025, while Miller currently has a full no-trade clause (NTC). This gives Allvin significantly more flexibility in potential Pettersson trades.

This news comes as no surprise to Canucks fans who have witnessed the ongoing saga surrounding both players. Miller, who signed a lucrative seven-year extension with the Canucks last year, has been the subject of trade rumors for the past few months. While his offensive production remains high, his inconsistent play, leave of absence, and questionable defensive efforts have led many to believe that a change of scenery might be best for both parties. The New York Rangers, Miller’s former team, are reportedly interested in a reunion and are believed to be the only team he would waive his NTC for.

Pettersson, on the other hand, represents a more complex situation. The supremely talented young center is a cornerstone franchise player, the type of player you build around, not trade away. However, his rift with Miller, and with his NMC approaching, the Canucks may be forced to make a difficult decision if they can’t sort things out. The Carolina Hurricanes, Buffalo Sabres, and Columbus Blue Jackets have all been linked to Pettersson, recognizing the opportunity to acquire a potential superstar.

It’s a delicate balancing act for Allvin. Does he move a valuable asset in Miller now, potentially jeopardizing the team’s playoff hopes this season? Or does he risk trading Pettersson? The pressure is mounting, and the Canucks faithful are anxiously awaiting a resolution. One thing is certain: the coming weeks will be crucial in determining the direction of this franchise.
