The Vancouver Canucks are sitting second last in the NHL right now. It is a sentence that stings to read, but the standings don’t lie. With the season slipping away into a mire of mediocrity, the conversation in Vancouver has shifted from “playoff hopes” to “franchise-altering decisions.” The biggest question looming over the organization is one that many fans dread acknowledging: Is it time to trade captain Quinn Hughes to maximize the return and truly reset the timeline?

TSN’s Craig Button didn’t mince words when addressing the situation. When asked if the Canucks need to seriously consider moving their franchise defenseman, his answer was a wake-up call for the entire organization.

The Hard Truth About Quinn Hughes’ Value

Let’s be clear—we are talking about one of the absolute best defensemen in the National Hockey League. Quinn Hughes is a difference-maker, a superstar, and a player who can control the game in ways few others can. But that is exactly why this conversation is happening.

“When you have Quinn Hughes on your team, there’s not going to be any lack of calls coming from other managers,” Button noted. “In fact, those calls should come in on a daily basis. And I think the Vancouver Canucks absolutely have to listen.”

From my perspective as an NHL analyst, this is about asset management. If you aren’t winning with Hughes now, and the team is statistically one of the worst in the league, holding onto him while his value is at its absolute peak might be emotional, not logical. If you are the Canucks, you have to open your mind to the possibility that trading your best player could be the only way to build a team that can actually contend in three years, rather than just spinning its wheels today.

Staring Reality in the Face

The future isn’t about March. It isn’t about a miracle run to the playoffs. According to Money Puck, the Canucks have the second-worst chance of making the playoffs and the second-best chance of landing the first overall pick (trailing only the Nashville Predators).

Button emphasizes that the Canucks need to “stare reality in the mirror.” The reflection isn’t pretty. They aren’t contenders. They aren’t even close. Whether it’s moving pending UFAs like Kiefer Sherwood or considering a massive blockbuster involving Hughes, the goal must be to escape the trap of mediocrity.

“If you don’t do that, you’re just going to wallow in mediocrity continuously,” Button warned. A trade involving Hughes would yield a “huge” return—one that could restock the cupboard with elite prospects and picks. It is a painful pill to swallow, but for a team at the bottom of the standings, it might be the only medicine that works.
