The Vancouver Canucks are in a tough spot. They’re a team with a lot of potential, but they’re also a team with some glaring weaknesses. One of those weaknesses is on defense, where they lack a true puck-moving defenseman. That’s why the Canucks should make a trade for Calgary Flames defenseman Mackenzie Weegar.
I’ve been watching Weegar closely for years, and he’s exactly the type of player the Canucks need. He’s an excellent skater with great vision and puck-moving skills. He can make the first pass out of the zone, he can join the rush, and he can quarterback a power play. In short, he’s everything the Canucks are missing on defense.
Patrick Johnston of The Province recently wrote that the Canucks should target Weegar, and I couldn’t agree more. Johnston argues that Weegar is the kind of player you trade for when your window to win is now. And he’s right. The Canucks have a talented young core, and they need to take advantage of it while they can. Adding Weegar would give them a legitimate top-pairing defenseman and would make them a serious contender in the Western Conference.
Why Weegar is the Perfect Fit for the Canucks
Some might argue that Weegar is too expensive, but I don’t think that’s the case. He has six years left on his contract at a reasonable cap hit of $6.25 million. That’s a fair price to pay for a top-pairing defenseman who is in the prime of his career.
The Canucks have the assets to make a deal happen. They have a number of young players and prospects that would be attractive to the Flames. They could also offer up their first-round pick in the upcoming draft.
I know that trading within the division is always difficult, but the Canucks need to make this move. Weegar is the missing piece that they need to take the next step. He’s a proven winner, and he would be a perfect fit in Vancouver.
