Utah's GM is actively pursuing trades to bolster the defense after injuries to Durzi and Marino. Columbus' Ivan Provorov has emerged as a prime target.

The Utah Hockey Club’s inaugural season has been a mixed bag so far. While their 4-2-1 record is respectable, they’ve been hit hard by the injury bug.

Defensemen Sean Durzi and John Marino are both on long-term injured reserve, leaving a significant hole on the blue line. This has forced General Manager Bill Armstrong to explore the trade market for reinforcements, and a new name has emerged as a potential target: Columbus Blue Jackets defenseman, Ivan Provorov.

This rumor comes from TSN’s Insider Trading, where Pierre LeBrun reported that Armstrong has “checked in on” Provorov. The 27-year-old Russian is a pending unrestricted free agent and could be a valuable addition to Utah’s roster. Provorov is a solid two-way defenseman who can log big minutes and contribute offensively. He’s exactly the type of player the Hockey Club needs to solidify their defense and make a push for the playoffs.

However, prying Provorov away from Columbus may not be easy. Blue Jackets GM Don Waddell might be hesitant to move him this early in the season. Waddell likely wants to see how his team performs in the coming months before making any significant roster changes. It’s possible he’ll wait until closer to the December holiday season to assess his options and decide whether to become a buyer or seller.

This puts Utah in a tricky situation. They need help on defense now, but they also don’t want to overpay for a rental player. Armstrong will need to carefully weigh his options and decide whether to make a strong push for Provorov now or explore other options.

One thing is clear: Armstrong is committed to building a competitive team in Utah. He’s not afraid to make bold moves, and the Provorov rumor is just the latest example of his aggressive approach. With the Western Conference wide open, Utah has a real chance to make some noise in the playoffs. Acquiring a player like Provorov could be the key to achieving that goal.
