The Shane Wright-to-Pittsburgh rumor has substance, but it is important to define what has and has not been reported. The Pittsburgh Penguins are reportedly intrigued by the idea of acquiring the Seattle Kraken centre, according to sources who spoke with The Athletic’s Josh Yohe. That establishes legitimate interest from Pittsburgh. It does not mean the teams are negotiating an advanced trade or that Kyle Dubas has submitted a formal offer.
Seattle’s willingness to discuss Wright is not a new development. The Kraken were reportedly listening to offers during the 2025-26 season, and Wright’s agent, Kurt Overhardt, later confirmed that his client had requested a trade. Seattle may try to accommodate that request, but the Kraken can still keep Wright if another team fails to meet their price.
For the Penguins, the attraction is obvious. Wright is a 22-year-old right-shot centre with another season remaining at a cap hit of only $886,666. He would also remain under team control as a restricted free agent when his entry-level contract expires in 2027. Those are exactly the age, position and contractual characteristics Pittsburgh should be targeting while Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin and Kris Letang approach the final stages of their careers.
Why Shane Wright Fits the Pittsburgh Penguins’ Long-Term Plan
Wright has not developed into the franchise centre many expected when he entered the 2022 NHL Draft as a potential first-overall selection. However, describing him as a failed prospect would be premature.
He produced 19 goals, 25 assists and 44 points in 79 games during 2024-25. His offence dropped to 12 goals, 15 assists and 27 points in 74 games last season, but some of his underlying results were more encouraging. Wright posted a 53.0 expected-goals percentage at five-on-five despite receiving fewer than 12 minutes of five-on-five ice time per game.

The decline is concerning, but it also explains why Wright could become available. Pittsburgh would not be acquiring a finished top-six centre. It would be betting that a larger role, a different coaching environment and time around Crosby and Malkin could unlock more of his offensive ability.
There is also an intriguing front-office connection. Ron Francis was Seattle’s general manager when Wright was drafted and signed his entry-level contract. Francis is now a special advisor in Pittsburgh’s hockey operations department. It is reasonable to infer that the Penguins have access to unusually detailed background information about Wright’s development, habits and personality.
Would Rickard Rakell Be Enough for the Seattle Kraken?
Rickard Rakell is an obvious name for trade speculation, but there is no confirmed report that Pittsburgh has formally offered him for Wright.
Rakell scored 24 goals and 48 points in 60 games last season. He is signed for two more years at a $5-million cap hit and has an eight-team no-trade list. Seattle could theoretically be one of the teams he can block, although the contents of his list are not public.
A direct Rakell-for-Wright exchange would reduce Pittsburgh’s 2026-27 cap commitment by approximately $4.11 million. That would be excellent for the Penguins, but it illustrates why Seattle would likely demand additional value. The Kraken would be trading a 22-year-old centre under team control for a 33-year-old winger carrying a much larger contract.
Rakell could be part of the transaction if Seattle wants immediate scoring, but he should not be viewed as the entire return. A more realistic structure would include Rakell, an NHL-ready prospect and a second-round draft pick. Pittsburgh has accumulated enough draft capital to negotiate without automatically placing its best prospects or an unprotected first-round selection on the table. The Penguins previously reported that no NHL team held more selections in the opening three rounds over the following four drafts.

A score of 36 suggests Wright is worth considerably more than a traditional reclamation project, but less than an established top-six centre. Seattle can justifiably demand a meaningful young asset. It would be difficult to justify the Penguins surrendering both an elite prospect and an unprotected first-round pick for a player whose production declined so sharply last season.
My Take on a Potential Shane Wright Trade
I believe Wright is the type of gamble Pittsburgh should investigate. The Penguins cannot wait until Crosby and Malkin are gone before searching for their next generation of centres. By that point, the acquisition cost for a young, controllable player could be even higher.
However, Dubas must pay for the player Wright is today, not for the prospect scouts imagined he would become four years ago. Rakell, a secondary NHL-ready prospect and a future second-round selection, would be a defensible offer. A premium first-round pick or one of Pittsburgh’s best young players would make the risk much harder to accept.
The most important takeaway is that Pittsburgh’s interest appears credible, while the proposed Rakell package remains speculation. There is a logical hockey fit, a contract fit and a front-office connection, but there is not yet evidence that a trade is close.
