Detroit Red Wings targeting Brock Boeser in 2025 NHL free agency for top-six scoring upgrade

As the 2024-25 NHL season draws to a close, the Detroit Red Wings find themselves on the outside of the playoff picture once again. Despite a promising start, a disheartening second half has derailed their postseason hopes. The Wings have now gone nine straight seasons without playoff hockey, and according to The Athletic’s Max Bultman, the pressure is mounting.

Among the more intriguing Brock Boeser rumors this offseason is the Detroit Red Wings’ growing interest in the pending free agent, should he not re-sign with the Vancouver Canucks before July 1st. Boeser, who just put together one of the most productive seasons of his career last season, is expected to command a significant contract — likely in the $8 to $9 million AAV range.

General Manager Steve Yzerman is entering what could be a make-or-break offseason. After six years of rebuilding, patience is wearing thin among the fanbase and potentially ownership. Yzerman has built a solid core with Dylan Larkin, Lucas Raymond, and Moritz Seider, but the lack of elite goal-scoring depth continues to haunt the Wings.

Could Brock Boeser Be the Top-Six Scoring Solution the Red Wings Need?

Boeser is a natural goal scorer with a heavy shot, a strong net-front presence, and underrated playmaking ability. Slotting him alongside Larkin or J.T. Compher could give the Red Wings a much-needed jolt of offensive consistency in their top six. With over $21 million in projected cap space and 18 roster players under contract, the Wings are one of the few teams with both the need and the financial flexibility to sign a player like Boeser.

My personal insight? If Yzerman doesn’t make a splash this summer, it may signal a shift in the organization’s confidence in him. Boeser checks all the boxes: age (28), experience, scoring touch, and leadership. If available, Detroit should pursue him aggressively — and beat out other suitors who will undoubtedly circle if Vancouver lets him walk.
