The 28-year-old blueliner has just one year remaining on his current deal, and while he’s eligible to sign an extension on July 1, both he and the team have acknowledged some “uncertainty” around his future.
Sound familiar? It should. This is the same situation that played out with Elias Lindholm, Chris Tanev, and Noah Hanifin—core players who were all eventually traded when extension talks fell flat. Andersson, a right-shot defenseman who logs big minutes and contributes offensively, would certainly command a strong return if Calgary chooses to move him.
From my perspective, if no contract extension is agreed upon early in the offseason, Conroy would be wise to explore trade options. The last thing the Flames need heading into training camp is a lingering contract saga. Andersson could become one of the top available blueliners on the market, especially for contending teams that miss out on free agents like Ivan Provorov, Aaron Ekblad, or Vladislav Gavrikov.
Trading Andersson now, when his value is high and interest will be at its peak, could help accelerate Calgary’s retooling effort and avoid the risk of losing him for nothing in free agency next summer.
