The Calgary Flames find themselves in a familiar, yet precarious position with one of their cornerstone players. The future of Rasmus Andersson in a Flames jersey is hanging in the balance, and as we inch closer to the NHL trade deadline, the question on everyone’s mind is: will he stay or will he go? While NHL insider Pierre LeBrun suggests a deal is unlikely, the door for a contract extension isn’t completely shut. This situation is a high-stakes game of poker, and both sides are playing their cards close to the vest.
The crux of the issue boils down to term. At 28 years old, turning 29 next month, Andersson is looking for a long-term, eight-year commitment. From a player’s perspective, this makes perfect sense. This will likely be his last opportunity to cash in on a big-money, long-term deal. However, for the Flames, an eight-year contract for a player who will be 37 at its conclusion is a risky proposition. The NHL is a young man’s game, and long-term deals for players on the wrong side of 30 can quickly become albatrosses.
The Eight-Year Question: Why the Flames Are Holding Back
This isn’t to say the Flames don’t value Andersson. He’s a top-pairing defenseman who logs heavy minutes and is a leader on and off the ice. But the Flames are also in a transitional phase, and a long-term, big-money deal for Andersson might not align with their future plans. A shorter-term deal, perhaps in the four-to-five-year range, would be a much more palatable option for the organization. But would Andersson be willing to leave money and years on the table to stay in Calgary? That’s the million-dollar question.
If a compromise can’t be reached, a trade by the March 6th deadline seems almost inevitable. The Flames can’t afford to lose a player of Andersson’s caliber for nothing in free agency. There will be no shortage of suitors for a top-pairing, right-shot defenseman. Teams like the Vegas Golden Knights, who were reportedly close to a deal this summer, will undoubtedly be calling again. This is a situation that will have Flames fans on the edge of their seats for the foreseeable future.
