Why the Philadelphia Flyers Could Still Tempt Adam Fantilli
The reason the rumor refuses to disappear is simple: Adam Fantilli checks the most difficult box on Philadelphia’s roster-building wish list.
He is a young center with legitimate first-line upside.
Fantilli finished the 2025-26 season with 24 goals and 35 assists for 59 points in 82 games for the Columbus Blue Jackets. At 21 years old, he already has three NHL seasons under his belt and remains young enough to develop alongside Philadelphia’s emerging core.

From my perspective, that is what makes Fantilli more interesting to Philadelphia than almost any veteran center who could become available through trade.
The Flyers would not simply be acquiring a player to help them next season. They would potentially be acquiring the centerpiece of their forward group for most of the next decade.
That distinction matters when talking about surrendering enormous draft capital.
The Adam Fantilli Offer Sheet Math Could Pressure Columbus
Philadelphia currently has approximately $13.78 million in projected cap space, while Columbus sits at approximately $13.50 million. Those numbers make the situation fascinating because a Fantilli deal near Columbus’ reported range fits for both clubs, but an aggressive Flyers offer above that level could force roster moves.

The biggest obstacle isn’t actually finding an extra $500,000 or $1 million.
It is the draft-pick compensation.
For the 2026 offseason, any offer-sheet AAV of $11,939,166 or more requires four first-round draft picks if the player’s original team declines to match. That means virtually any realistic Fantilli offer capable of putting meaningful pressure on Columbus would push Philadelphia into the maximum compensation bracket.
That is why I believe Philadelphia would have to be absolutely convinced Fantilli is becoming an elite No. 1 center before making the move.

This rumor would be much easier to dismiss if Philadelphia had not just attempted essentially the same strategy.
On July 3, the Flyers signed Anaheim Ducks center Leo Carlsson to a five-year, $90 million offer sheet carrying an $18 million AAV. Anaheim ultimately matched the contract on July 9, preventing Philadelphia from acquiring him for four first-round picks.
That move told the entire NHL something important about Briere.
Philadelphia believes acquiring a young franchise-level center is worth taking extraordinary risks.
The question is whether the Flyers see Fantilli in the same category.
Has the Earlier Adam Fantilli Report Been Proven Wrong?
Not yet.
As of August 13, there has been no confirmed Adam Fantilli offer sheet from Philadelphia and no credible report that one is imminent.
What has changed is the environment around the negotiations.
Fantilli remains unsigned, the Blue Jackets reportedly remain separated from their young center on contract value, and Philadelphia continues to hold substantial cap flexibility. Meanwhile, Daily Faceoff noted this week that the Carlsson deal and other major young-star contracts have complicated Fantilli’s valuation.
That’s enough to keep the speculation alive, but not enough to turn speculation into reported fact.
My Take: A Flyers Offer Sheet Is Unlikely, but the Pressure Is Real
I still believe the most likely outcome is Adam Fantilli signing a new contract with the Columbus Blue Jackets.
Columbus drafted Fantilli third overall to become its franchise center. Letting a 21-year-old player of his caliber walk for draft picks would be an enormous organizational decision, and the Blue Jackets have enough cap flexibility to match or create the necessary room.
But Philadelphia makes this negotiation more interesting simply by existing.
Briere has already demonstrated that four first-round picks are not an automatic deal-breaker when the target is the right young center. If Fantilli’s negotiations drag closer to training camp and his asking price continues climbing, the Flyers have the cap flexibility and recent history to ensure Columbus cannot completely ignore the possibility.
That’s what makes this rumor worth watching.
It isn’t about an offer sheet that has happened.
It’s about whether Philadelphia could decide Fantilli is valuable enough to try again.
