Chicago Blackhawks forward Oliver Moore skates with the puck amid November 2026 NHL trade rumors involving the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Oliver Moore, Chicago's 2023 first-round pick, is attracting trade interest as the Blackhawks explore roster upgrades around Connor Bedard. A potential Pittsburgh Penguins trade is one scenario worth examining.

The Chicago Blackhawks are actively exploring the NHL trade market, and Oliver Moore is emerging as one of the young players attracting interest. Sportsnet insider Elliotte Friedman reported on November 7 that Chicago is very active and teams have been asking about prospects and players who can play centre. In a November 8 report, The Fourth Period specifically identified Moore among the players drawing inquiries.

I’ve followed NHL trade rumors and salary-cap developments for nhltraderumor.com since February 2010. What interests me here isn’t simply whether Chicago will make a trade. It’s whether general manager Kyle Davidson can improve Connor Bedard’s supporting cast without sacrificing a player whose best hockey may still be ahead of him.

Blackhawks Trade Rumors: Is Oliver Moore Available?

According to The Fourth Period, rival teams have inquired about Moore, Frank Nazar and Ryan Donato. The outlet reports Chicago has little appetite for moving Nazar but may consider a deal involving Moore if the return is compelling.

Friedman separately indicated Chicago’s extensive collection of 2027 draft picks could be in play. The Blackhawks hold three first-round selections, giving Davidson considerable flexibility.

Chicago entered Sunday at 4-13-1 following a 9-2 loss to Carolina. Its six-game losing streak has intensified the urgency surrounding potential roster changes.

Moore, 21, is especially interesting because of his contract. The Blackhawks signed him to a five-year, $21.25 million extension in September. His new $4.25 million annual cap hit begins in 2027-28 and runs through 2031-32.

That long-term control makes Moore valuable to Chicago, but it could also make him attractive to a team looking to get younger.

Mock NHL Trade: Could Oliver Moore Land in Pittsburgh?

My hypothetical proposal: Chicago sends Oliver Moore to the Pittsburgh Penguins for Rickard Rakell, with Pittsburgh retaining 50% of Rakell’s salary, plus a 2027 second-round pick.

Important: This is an original trade scenario, not a reported offer or confirmed negotiation between Chicago and Pittsburgh.

Proposed Chicago Blackhawks–Pittsburgh Penguins Trade
Team Receives Sends 2026-27 Cap Change
Chicago Rickard Rakell ($2.5M retained cap hit) and Pittsburgh’s 2027 second-round pick Oliver Moore ($941,667 roster cap hit) +$1,558,333
Pittsburgh Oliver Moore Rakell (50% salary retained) and a 2027 second-round pick -$1,558,333

Illustrative full-season cap-hit comparison using PuckPedia’s 2026-27 roster figures. Actual trade-date cap accounting depends on daily accrual and roster transactions.

Rickard Rakell’s $5 Million Contract Makes Salary Retention Critical

PuckPedia lists Chicago with approximately $2.02 million in current cap space and $1.61 million in projected space. Pittsburgh has approximately $9.07 million current and $7.20 million projected.

Rakell carries a $5 million cap hit through 2027-28. If Pittsburgh retained half, Chicago’s incoming charge would be $2.5 million, compared with Moore’s current $941,667 roster cap hit.

The estimated $1.56 million increase would leave Chicago approximately $463,000 in current room and just $57,000 in projected room before other adjustments. It’s mathematically possible on these figures, but uncomfortably tight.

There’s also a future wrinkle: Pittsburgh would carry Moore’s $4.25 million extension starting next season while retaining $2.5 million on Rakell through 2027-28. That’s $6.75 million combined, compared with Rakell’s existing $5 million charge. Pittsburgh would be spending more next season to acquire long-term youth.

Why Oliver Moore Makes Sense for the Pittsburgh Penguins

The Penguins are a logical team to examine because Friedman has also reported their desire to become faster and younger. Rakell, meanwhile, appears on The Fourth Period’s November Trade Watch List.

Moore’s speed, centre/left-wing versatility and extended contractual control would fit a transition beyond the Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin era.

He could initially play in Pittsburgh’s middle six, potentially alongside a young forward such as Ville Koivunen or Ben Kindel, rather than immediately replacing a veteran on the top line.

For Chicago, Rakell would supply an established right-wing scoring option. I could envision a Tyler Bertuzzi–Connor Bedard–Rickard Rakell combination, with Roman Kantserov available elsewhere in the top six. These are proposed combinations, not reported line changes.

Rakell produced 24 goals and 48 points in 60 games last season. The question is whether that immediate finishing ability justifies surrendering a 21-year-old with five additional seasons of team control.

What Chicago Must Receive Before Trading Oliver Moore

Davidson’s objective should be to find productive players who fit Bedard’s development timeline, not merely to chase a short-term improvement.

Moore was the 19th overall pick in 2023. His extension suggests Chicago valued his development, and his skating gives him a potential path to becoming a dependable two-way contributor.

There is useful trade history here. When Pittsburgh acquired Rakell from Anaheim in March 2022, the Ducks received a second-round pick, prospect Calle Clang and two depth forwards, while retaining 35% of Rakell’s salary.

That isn’t an identical comparison: Rakell was approaching unrestricted free agency then. Moore is a younger, longer-controlled asset now. In my view, Pittsburgh would need to add draft capital to justify Chicago accepting a veteran-for-prospect exchange.

Oliver Moore Trade Rumor Meter

Moore-to-Pittsburgh Scenario 3/10

Rating: Unlikely. The roster logic is credible, but there is no confirmed negotiation linking Moore to Pittsburgh. Chicago also has strong reasons to keep its young forward.

Dave Jenkins: Will the Blackhawks Actually Trade Oliver Moore?

I believe Chicago will continue exploring significant trades, but I wouldn’t move Moore simply to land an older scoring winger. The Blackhawks have already invested in his future, and Bedard’s championship window should extend well beyond the next two seasons.

A Moore trade becomes more attractive if it delivers a proven, younger top-six forward with several prime years remaining. Rakell would help Chicago score now, but I don’t see this particular package getting done without compelling additional value.

My prediction: Moore remains a Blackhawk in the near term, even as trade inquiries continue. Davidson has more incentive to use his surplus draft picks before moving another core young player.
