Darnell Nurse laying on the ice after a hit from Ryan Reaves
Darnell Nurse criticizes Ryan Reaves for a head hit that sidelined the Oilers defenseman.

Edmonton Oilers defenseman Darnell Nurse didn’t mince words when discussing the hit from Toronto Maple Leafs forward Ryan Reaves that has sidelined him since Saturday. The incident, which occurred in the Oilers’ 4-3 overtime loss to the Leafs, saw Reaves deliver a high, forceful check to Nurse, leaving the Oilers blueliner with a concussion. Reaves was suspended five games for an illegal check.

“In situations like that, there’s definitely an onus on the player with the puck to be aware of where everyone else is on the ice, for sure,” Nurse admitted to reporters on Thursday. “With that said, even if you put yourself in a bad spot, there’s lots of body on a 6-foot-4 hockey player to hit, and not one piece was touched other than the head.”

Nurse’s comments highlight a growing concern in the NHL about player safety and the responsibility of those delivering hits. While acknowledging his own need for awareness, Nurse clearly believes Reaves crossed a line. “You can argue about the intent,” he continued, “but there’s certain guys in the league that, each shift they go out there, they try and go inflict pain. I think it’s pretty obvious what was going on there.”

This isn’t the first time Reaves has been involved in a controversial hit. Known for his physicality and aggressive style of play, the veteran forward has often walked a fine line between delivering hard checks and playing recklessly. Nurse’s frustration stems not only from the injury itself but also from what he perceives as a pattern of behavior from Reaves.

Nurse, a key component of the Oilers’ blueline, is in the midst of his 11th season with the team. His absence leaves a significant void on the Oilers’ defense, impacting their ability to move the puck and defend against opposing forwards. The 29-year-old has recorded nine points in 18 games this season while averaging over 20 minutes of ice time per game.

The Oilers are undoubtedly hoping for a swift return for Nurse, but the team has not provided a specific timeline for his recovery.
