Nick Robertson rumors heat up as the NHL trade deadline approaches. Will the Toronto Maple Leafs use the young forward as trade bait to acquire much-needed assets?

The NHL trade deadline is fast approaching, and the Toronto Maple Leafs are expected to be buyers as they look to bolster their roster for a deep playoff run. With needs at third-line center and right-shot defenseman, the Leafs are reportedly considering moving young forward Nick Robertson to free up cap space and acquire assets.

Robertson, 23, has had an up-and-down tenure in Toronto since being drafted in the second round in 2019. Despite flashes of brilliance, including a strong start to the 2024-25 season, the California native has struggled to secure a consistent role in the Leafs’ lineup. On a one-year, $875K contract, Robertson becomes a restricted free agent this summer with arbitration rights, adding another layer of complexity to his situation.

Why Nick Robertson’s Trade Value is Under the Microscope

According to Leafs insider James Mirtle of The Athletic, Robertson’s trade value is modest at best. Mirtle suggests that the young winger might fetch no more than a fourth-round pick in return, as teams may view him as a reclamation project rather than an immediate impact player.

Robertson’s potential is undeniable. He’s a skilled forward with a quick release and offensive instincts, but injuries and inconsistency have hampered his development. A change of scenery could be exactly what he needs to rejuvenate his career. For the Leafs, moving Robertson would not only create cap flexibility but also allow them to address more pressing needs ahead of the playoffs.

Teams like the Anaheim Ducks, Utah Hockey Club, and San Jose Sharks—rebuilding franchises with room to take on young talent—could be potential landing spots. These teams might be willing to take a chance on Robertson in exchange for draft capital or a depth player who fits Toronto’s needs.

What’s Next for the Maple Leafs?

As the trade deadline looms, all eyes are on Leafs GM Brad Treliving. Will he pull the trigger on a deal involving Robertson, or will he hold onto the young forward in hopes of unlocking his potential down the line? One thing is certain: the Leafs are in win-now mode, and every move will be made with the Stanley Cup in mind.

  1. Robertson is at best worth a 2028 7th round pick, or more likely a waiver wire pick up. The only folks who think he has potential and value are hopeless dreaming TML fans.
