Mike Babcock

The Hockey News: The San Jose Sharks are expected not to re-sign goalie Antti Niemi. New York Rangers goalie Cam Talbot could become the Sharks’ prime target, though the Rangers could seek a first-round pick in this year’s draft to replace the one they dealt away last year to Tampa Bay. Ottawa Senators goalie Robin Lehner could be shopped if the Senators re-sign Andrew Hammond.

The Fourth Period: The Montreal Canadiens have made it a priority to re-sign pending UFA defenseman Jeff Petry to a new contract. Petry, 27, has voiced his desire to re-sign with the Canadiens, rather than test the waters as a free agent in July.

Mlive.com: Detroit Red Wings coach Mike Babcock has apparently finished speaking with other clubs. He will speak with the Wings today and will likely reach a decision on his coaching future on Wednesday, May 20. The Buffalo Sabres, San Jose Sharks, St. Louis Blues and Toronto Maple Leafs are believed to be the teams Babcock has talked to. The Red Wings offered Babcock a four-year deal worth $3.25 million a season. The deep-pocketed Maple Leafs and Sabres could offer as much as $5 million per season.
