Shane Wright, Leo Carlsson and Claude Giroux headline today’s NHL news as trade speculation, Philadelphia’s offer-sheet drama and free-agent rumors continue across the league.

The biggest NHL news today is not another depth signing or routine offseason trade. The Philadelphia Flyers have submitted a five-year, $90 million offer sheet to Anaheim Ducks centre Leo Carlsson, a contract carrying an extraordinary $18 million average annual value. Anaheim now has seven days to match the offer. If the Ducks decline, Philadelphia will acquire Carlsson and surrender four future first-round draft picks.

That decision could determine what happens next with several prominent centres. Shane Wright’s name is gaining momentum in NHL trade rumors after his agent publicly confirmed productive conversations with the Seattle Kraken. The Edmonton Oilers are also exploring veteran forwards, while the Toronto Maple Leafs continued remaking their roster by signing defenceman Emil Andrae.

My read is that the Carlsson offer sheet has created two separate NHL markets. One involves elite young players whose contract leverage just increased dramatically. The other involves teams scrambling to find affordable alternatives before the price of acquiring a centre rises again.

Leo Carlsson’s $90 Million Offer Sheet Changes the NHL

Carlsson’s offer sheet is worth $18 million annually over five years, temporarily making the 21-year-old the highest-paid player in the NHL by average annual value. Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reported that Anaheim’s previous offer was believed to be between $12 million and $13 million annually, while Carlsson’s asking price had been closer to $15 million. Philadelphia did not simply beat the Ducks’ proposal, it overwhelmed it.

The most fascinating part of this story is the five-year term. Philadelphia is not paying for eight seasons of certainty. The Flyers are paying a record salary while potentially walking Carlsson toward unrestricted free agency much earlier than Anaheim would have preferred.

From a team-building perspective, this is an aggressive bet on positional scarcity. True first-line centres rarely become available through trades or unrestricted free agency. Philadelphia decided that paying an unprecedented salary, and potentially four first-round picks, was preferable to waiting years for another opportunity.

The Ducks can afford to match, but the contract would immediately alter their salary structure. Cutter Gauthier, Beckett Sennecke and Pavel Mintyukov are among the young players whose future negotiations could now become significantly more expensive. Friedman also noted that this was the fourth NHL offer sheet in 23 months, suggesting general managers are becoming less reluctant to use the mechanism.

Shane Wright Trade Talks Are Becoming More Real

Earlier reports indicating that Wright remained available have now received stronger public confirmation. Wright’s agent, Kurt Overhardt, told Sportsnet: “I can confirm that we have had positive conversations with GM Jason Botterill, and he has agreed to move Shane this summer.”

Seattle has not promised to accept a discounted return. Other NHL executives reportedly believe the Kraken want fair value and could attempt to package Wright as part of a larger deal for an established top-six forward. Wright produced 12 goals and 27 points in 74 games last season after recording 44 points the previous year.

I would not classify Wright as a failed prospect. His development has been uneven, but he remains a 22-year-old right-shot centre with another season remaining at an entry-level cap hit. That combination should attract teams searching for upside without committing premium free-agent money.

The Flyers had reportedly entered discussions involving Wright before submitting the Carlsson offer sheet. If Anaheim matches Philadelphia’s offer, Wright would become a logical alternative because he would cost significantly less against the salary cap and would not require the Flyers to surrender four first-round selections. Philadelphia’s interest was reported before the 2026 NHL Draft, although no completed trade has been announced.

Oilers Monitor Giroux and Tarasenko as Free-Agent Market Thins

Friedman reported that Edmonton was among the teams interested in Claude Giroux and wondered whether the Oilers could also pursue Vladimir Tarasenko. Both veterans remained unsigned as of Saturday afternoon.

Giroux registered 49 points in 82 games for Ottawa last season. He is no longer a primary offensive driver, but his faceoff ability, passing and power-play experience could help Edmonton’s middle six. Tarasenko would offer more of a shooting threat, although his role and contract expectations will determine whether he fits the Oilers’ plans.

The Oilers should resist paying for reputation. Their best outcome would be a short-term contract with limited risk, allowing a veteran to complement Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl without creating another difficult long-term cap commitment.

Toronto also completed some quieter business Saturday by signing restricted free-agent defenceman Emil Andrae to a two-year contract reportedly worth $3.1 million. The 24-year-old recorded two goals and 11 assists in 61 games last season. Toronto acquired Andrae, Samuel Ersson and a third-round pick from Philadelphia on June 16 in exchange for Joseph Woll and Simon Benoit.

In my view, the Andrae contract confirms that Toronto’s June trade was not simply about acquiring temporary negotiating rights. The Maple Leafs see an inexpensive puck-moving defenceman who can compete for regular NHL minutes while their more expensive roster additions receive most of the attention.
