The latest NHL News today is beginning to feel much more like hockey season. Training camps open next week, rookie showcases are about to begin, and several significant contract and trade situations are reaching the point where teams can no longer comfortably push decisions down the road.
Boston made one of Tuesday’s biggest statements by locking up Fraser Minten for seven years and $50.4 million, while Sidney Crosby revealed that conversations are already underway regarding another contract with Pittsburgh. In Ottawa, Drake Batherson wants his extension settled before training camp. Meanwhile, Simon Edvinsson remains unsigned in Detroit but reportedly still intends to report.
Then there is the rumor market.
Quinn Hughes, Connor Hellebuyck and Dylan Larkin remain three of the most important names to watch, and with NHL camps approaching, the pressure on Minnesota, Winnipeg and Detroit is only going to increase.
My biggest takeaway from Tuesday’s NHL News: we are entering the part of September where unresolved offseason stories start becoming actual roster problems.
NHL News Today: Boston Locks Up Fraser Minten for Seven Years
The most concrete move of the day belongs to the Boston Bruins, who officially signed Fraser Minten to a seven-year, $50.4 million extension carrying a $7.2 million annual cap hit.
Importantly, the new contract doesn’t begin until 2027-28. Minten will play the upcoming season on the final year of his entry-level contract.
The 22-year-old appeared in all 82 games for Boston last season and finished with 17 goals, 18 assists and 35 points, while posting a plus-21 rating. His 35 points were the most by a Bruins rookie since Danton Heinen and Jake DeBrusk in 2017-18.
Boston originally acquired Minten from Toronto in the Brandon Carlo trade in March 2025, along with draft capital. A little more than a year later, the Bruins are essentially declaring him part of their next core.
My read: $7.2 million is a substantial commitment for a player who has yet to produce a 40-point NHL season, but Boston isn’t paying solely for what Minten is today. The Bruins are betting on his age curve, two-way game and offensive growth. If he develops into a reliable 55-to-65-point center, this contract could look dramatically better several years from now.
Sidney Crosby Isn’t Ready to Put an Expiration Date on His Penguins Career
Another major NHL News development came from Las Vegas, where Sidney Crosby addressed his future during the NHL player media tour.
Crosby is entering the final year of his current contract, which carries his familiar $8.7 million cap hit, but his agent Pat Brisson has already been speaking with Pittsburgh Penguins general manager Kyle Dubas about what could come next.
Crosby indicated that he still wants to play as long as possible, with the 2028 World Cup of Hockey providing another potential milestone.
That matters because Crosby’s name will inevitably generate trade speculation whenever Pittsburgh’s future is discussed.
For now, however, this sounds considerably more like contract-extension territory than an exit strategy.
My observation is that Crosby’s situation needs to be separated from most NHL trade rumors. Unless his position changes dramatically, Pittsburgh still appears to be the organization controlling the next chapter.
Drake Batherson Wants Senators Contract Done Before Camp
Ottawa also has important contract business to handle.
Drake Batherson said Tuesday that he would like to get an extension finalized before training camp opens. Senators general manager Steve Staios also made it clear that Ottawa wants Batherson around long term.
The 28-year-old is entering the final season of a contract carrying a $4.975 million AAV and is coming off a career year in which he produced 33 goals and 71 points in 79 games.
This could become one of the more interesting comparable-contract situations of September.
Ottawa has already undergone a significant identity change following Brady Tkachuk’s departure, and letting another established offensive piece drift toward unrestricted free agency would create an unnecessary storyline throughout the season.
Simon Edvinsson Expected at Red Wings Camp Despite Contract Standoff
Detroit’s situation is more complicated.
According to a report relaying information from Pierre LeBrun, restricted free-agent defenseman Simon Edvinsson intends to attend Red Wings training camp even without a new contract.
Contract negotiations are reportedly on hold while Detroit works through its general manager situation following Steve Yzerman’s move into a senior advisory role and Shawn Horcoff taking over day-to-day responsibilities on an interim basis.
That is encouraging from a hockey standpoint, but Detroit can’t allow this issue to linger indefinitely.
Edvinsson is part of the Red Wings’ long-term defensive foundation. Getting his contract resolved should arguably rank among the first major priorities once the organization’s management structure is settled.
NHL Trade Rumors: Quinn Hughes, Connor Hellebuyck and Dylan Larkin Stay in Focus
The biggest NHL trade rumors remain unresolved.
Quinn Hughes is entering the final season of his contract with Minnesota and can become an unrestricted free agent in July 2027. Wild general manager Bill Guerin said recently that he remains confident a deal can be completed while acknowledging that Minnesota cannot simply force Hughes to sign.
The timing is becoming increasingly interesting. Hughes is expected to participate in national media availability this week, while training camp opens September 16.
Then there is Connor Hellebuyck.

The Winnipeg Jets goalie publicly confirmed in late August that he requested a trade months earlier. He remains under contract at an $8.5 million cap hit through 2030-31, giving Winnipeg considerable contractual control but also creating a fascinating leverage battle because of his no-movement protection and public desire to leave.
Tuesday’s rumor cycle also continued to link Dylan Larkin with a potential move out of Detroit. The Hockey News reported that his situation remains unresolved and that Minnesota, Florida and Vegas are among the destinations associated with his preferred list, while Dallas has also surfaced in speculation. Those destinations remain rumor reporting rather than confirmed trade negotiations.
My read: Hellebuyck remains the player I would consider most likely of the three to eventually move because the request is public. Hughes is different because Minnesota’s first choice remains an extension. Larkin sits somewhere between those situations, with his trade protection potentially determining how large Detroit’s actual market becomes.
NHL’s Next Generation Takes Center Stage
Away from contracts and trades, rookie hockey is about to become a major part of the daily NHL News cycle.
NHL.com highlighted several young players preparing for prospect tournaments beginning this weekend, including Toronto Maple Leafs No. 1 pick Gavin McKenna and San Jose Sharks No. 2 pick Ivar Stenberg.
Both have already signed their entry-level contracts and are expected to push directly toward NHL roles. Stenberg will participate in the Rookie Showcase in San Jose beginning September 12, while McKenna enters Toronto’s camp with enormous expectations surrounding his first NHL season.
That will be another storyline worth monitoring closely. Prospect tournaments normally generate a few September surprises, and this year’s elite rookie class has enough talent to make roster decisions genuinely interesting.
