The NHL offseason is in full swing, and trade rumors are swirling. One name that keeps popping up is Calgary Flames’ center, Nazem Kadri. With the Flames entering a rebuild phase, Kadri’s future with the team is uncertain. Recent reports suggest the Winnipeg Jets have emerged as a potential landing spot.
Kadri’s Fit in Winnipeg
Ken Wiebe of The Winnipeg Free Press recently stated that Kadri is “just what the Jets need.” It’s not hard to see why. The Jets are in “win-now” mode, with big-money extensions kicking in for Mark Scheifele and Connor Hellebuyck. Adding a seasoned veteran like Kadri would provide much-needed experience and grit to their second-line center position. Kadri’s feisty playing style and leadership qualities would perfectly complement the Jets’ core.
The Challenges
While Kadri’s potential move to Winnipeg is exciting, there are challenges. He will turn 34 in October, and any trade for him carries some risk. His contract, which includes a $7 million AAV and a full no-movement clause for the next two seasons, adds another layer of complexity. However, rumors suggest Kadri would be open to waiving his clause to play for a playoff contender like the Jets.
The Flames’ Perspective
From the Flames’ perspective, trading Kadri makes sense. They are clearly in rebuild mode and need to acquire young assets and draft picks. Kadri’s value is high, and they could get a significant return for him. However, they must find a trade partner willing to take on his contract.
My Take
In my opinion, a Kadri trade to the Jets is a win-win situation. The Jets get the experienced center they need to make a deep playoff run, and the Flames get valuable assets to help with their rebuild. The biggest hurdle is Kadri’s contract. However, if the Jets are serious about contending for the Stanley Cup, they need to be willing to take some risks.

Not a trade that would happen, especially at this time of the year.
While Flames are building up, they also want to make a run for playoffs. They need quality vets to help the younger players grow and develop. They also needs butts in seats and Kadri is popular. Kadri does this for them.
In all likelihood, Flames get same or more for Kadri at the trade deadline from a team wanting to go all-in, so it makes more sense for the Flames to hold their position, play out the season and evaluate where they are at coming up to the trade deadline.
Winnipeg can’t afford Kadri and I doubt Kadri would waive for a team like Winnipeg.
