The rumor mill is churning overtime in Calgary, and the biggest name being tossed around is Nazem Kadri. Let’s be blunt: when a team that had playoff expectations, like the Calgary Flames, stumbles this badly out of the gate, the media and fans naturally start playing armchair GM. It’s no surprise that other Canadian teams—you’re hearing names like Montreal, Vancouver, and even a potential reunion in Toronto—are eyeing Kadri. A 35-year-old, battle-hardened center with a Stanley Cup ring? That’s a plug-and-play solution for any contender’s top six.
But here’s what’s really happening behind the scenes, and why everyone needs to pump the brakes.
The speculation is just that: speculation. From everything we’re hearing, Nazem Kadri loves being a Calgary Flame. He chose to sign here, he’s a leader in that room, and he isn’t the one pushing for a move. Unless GM Craig Conroy decides to detonate the roster and begin a full-scale, scorched-earth “reconstruction,” any talk of trading Kadri right now is wildly premature.
Why the Flames Hold All the Cards with Kadri
Here’s my take, looking at this from a front-office perspective. The Flames are under zero pressure to move him this season. Kadri’s contract ($7M AAV through 2027-28) is significant. More importantly, he holds a 13-team no-trade clause. This isn’t some pending UFA they risk losing for nothing. This is their asset.
If the Calgary Flames are still floundering near the bottom of the standings by the Christmas roster freeze, that’s when Conroy will start listening. But “listening” doesn’t mean “selling.” Kadri’s NTC gives him power, but it still leaves 18 other teams as potential destinations, giving the Flames leverage. They can afford to be patient. If a desperate contender doesn’t meet their high price by the NHL trade deadline, they can simply wait until the summer, when more teams have cap flexibility and a clearer picture of their needs.
Trading a player who actually wants to be in your city, especially one of Kadri’s stature, is a delicate move. Conroy won’t be strong-armed into a lowball offer just because the team is underperforming in October. The ball is firmly in his court.
