The Nashville Predators’ disappointing 10-17-7 start to the season has extinguished their playoff hopes and ignited trade rumors. Fans hoping for a shakeup with some blockbuster deals might be disappointed. All signs point to GM Barry Trotz staying the course, retooling the roster, and building for the future.
According to Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic, the Predators are more interested in “resetting” than rebuilding. While they have already moved defenseman Alexandre Carrier and continue to explore other deals, a fire sale is not expected.
Trotz himself confirmed this approach in a recent statement to the media: “I’m not in the business of not winning. I’m in the business of trying to win. We’re not selling off. We are resetting. We know where we are. It’s not where we thought we would be. But we want to move forward.”
He further emphasized his focus on the future, stating, “I want to set myself up for the summer. We will look at the free-agent market. We will look at adding pieces. There will be teams that are going to be up against it (the cap), so we want to take advantage of that. “
Nashville Predators Trade Bait: Lauzon on the Block
Currently, the only player the Predators have actively made available is defenseman Jeremy Lauzon. This suggests that Trotz is looking to make smaller, strategic moves rather than overhauling the roster.
It’s worth noting that the Predators possess significant draft capital, including three first-round picks and two second-round picks in the 2025 NHL Entry Draft. This gives them ammunition to acquire an impact player at the deadline should they choose to change course. However, Trotz’s comments and current actions indicate a preference for a more measured approach.
