The Montreal Canadiens have been a pleasant surprise this season. After a rough past two seasons, many expected another long year. But with a 21-18-4 record, they’re surprisingly in the playoff hunt. This unexpected turn of events has made their NHL trade deadline strategy a lot more interesting.
While they’re looking to extend center Jake Evans, it appears David Savard and Christian Dvorak could be on the move.
Savard and Dvorak Trade Rumors Heat Up
NHL insider David Pagnotta recently reported that Canadiens GM Kent Hughes is exploring the trade market for Savard. Even if the Canadiens remain in the playoff race, Savard’s experience and leadership make him a valuable asset for contending teams.
Pagnotta also mentioned that the Canadiens have one remaining salary retention slot. This means they can retain up to 50% of a player’s salary in a trade. This could be used to make Savard’s $3.25 million cap hit more palatable or facilitate a deal involving Christian Dvorak’s $4.45 million contract.
The Canadiens have been trying to move Dvorak, but his contract and inconsistent play have made him a tough sell. Retaining salary could be the key to finding a trade partner.
My Take:
As someone who’s followed the Canadiens closely for years, I think trading Savard makes sense regardless of their playoff position. He’s a solid veteran, but the Canadiens are building for the future. His departure would open up ice time for younger defensemen and bring back assets that fit their long-term plan.
Dvorak’s situation is trickier. His contract is a major obstacle. Unless the Canadiens are willing to retain a significant portion of his salary, I don’t see a trade happening.
It’ll be fascinating to see how Hughes approaches the deadline. Does he prioritize the present and keep Savard for a playoff push? Or does he prioritize the future and sell off assets? Stay tuned!
