This makes a potential raise on his current $4.875 million AAV a tough pill to swallow for a team that will soon have a number of highly-paid players. If Matheson is looking for a big payday, he may have to look elsewhere. A shorter-term, team-friendly deal could be a possibility, but that’s a big “if” for a player of his caliber.
The Canadiens are building for the future, and while Matheson has been a solid contributor, the team’s long-term vision may not include him. The emergence of younger, more dynamic players, combined with the salary cap constraints, makes his departure seem more and more likely. As much as he may want to stay, the writing appears to be on the wall for Mike Matheson in Montreal.
