James Hagens in action, showcasing skills that make him the top prospect for the 2025 NHL Draft.
Discover why James Hagens is leading as the early favorite for the first-overall pick in the 2025 NHL Draft.

The hockey world is abuzz with the rise of a new star, James Hagens, whose stellar performance positions him as the early favorite for the first-overall pick in the 2025 NHL Entry Draft. This prodigious talent from the United States National Team Development Program (US NTDP) is making waves and drawing comparisons with some of the greatest names in the sport.

While Cole Eiserman, the goal-scoring sensation, is dominating the US NTDP U18 team’s scoring charts, it’s Hagens who’s capturing the imagination of scouts and fans alike. With an impressive tally of 28 points in just 15 games, he sits comfortably in second place in team scoring, right behind Eiserman.

Hagens’ prowess isn’t limited to domestic competitions. His international accolades are equally impressive, having played a pivotal role in the USA’s U17 gold victory in 2022, where he amassed an astonishing eight goals and 21 points over seven games. His contribution was crucial again when Team USA clinched gold at the U18s, adding five more points to his burgeoning resume.

James Hagens Leads the Pack as the Top Prospect for the 2025 NHL Draft

Craig Button, TSN Director of Scouting, has been vocal about Hagens’ potential, citing his exceptional offensive capabilities and vision on the ice. According to Button, Hagens excels in creating scoring opportunities and is also an underrated scorer, making him a top prospect for the upcoming draft.

The competition, however, is fierce for the #1 overall selection in 2025. Anton Frondell, the Swedish center, is another name to watch. Fresh from leading his team to a bronze at the U17s, Frondell has shown remarkable skill, both in scoring and in his defensive play. His performance with Djurgardens J20 squad further cements his position as a top contender.

The US NTDP U18 team boasts another potential top pick in Logan Hensler, known for his remarkable defensive skills and ability to make a difference on the ice. Hensler’s talent in both offense and defense makes him a strong candidate for the upcoming draft.

Lastly, Michael Misa and Roger McQueen are two forwards making significant strides this season. Misa’s exceptional status in the OHL and his creative playmaking skills, coupled with McQueen’s physical prowess and improved scoring, add depth to an already impressive pool of young talent.

As the 2025 NHL Entry Draft approaches, all eyes are on James Hagens, the prodigy poised to take the hockey world by storm. His journey from a promising young player to a potential first-overall pick is a testament to his hard work, skill, and the bright future that lies ahead in his hockey career.
