NHL trade rumors are swirling around Ottawa Senators defenseman Jakob Chychrun. Will the Sens move the talented blueliner this summer for a right-shot D-man or cap space?

The Ottawa Senators’ offseason plans appear to be taking shape, and defenseman Jakob Chychrun could be the centerpiece of their moves.

The talented blueliner has been the subject of trade rumors since before the March deadline, and those whispers have only intensified as the summer approaches.

Jakob Chychrun Trade Talk Heats Up as Senators Eye Offseason Moves

Senators general manager Steve Staios acknowledged having discussions with other teams regarding Chychrun, and it seems those talks could resume in the offseason. With one year remaining on his contract at a manageable $4.6 million AAV, Chychrun could be an attractive trade target for several teams.

While the Senators would undoubtedly prefer to retain Chychrun’s services, the reality of his impending UFA status next summer and the team’s desire to bolster their right side of the defense may necessitate a move. The Senators have a wealth of young talent on the left side, including Thomas Chabot and Jake Sanderson, making Chychrun expendable.

According to Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun, the Senators could explore a trade involving Chychrun before the NHL Draft in late June. The draft could provide a prime opportunity for the Senators to acquire a right-shot defenseman or create cap space to pursue one in free agency.

Several teams could be in the mix for Chychrun, including the Philadelphia Flyers, Detroit Red Wings, and Winnipeg Jets. All three teams have a need for a top-four defenseman and possess the assets to entice the Senators.

If the Senators do decide to trade Chychrun, they will be looking for a substantial return. A package involving a top prospect, or a high draft pick, could be the asking price for the 26-year-old defenseman.

The coming weeks will be crucial for the Senators as they weigh their options and determine the best course of action for the franchise. Whether Chychrun stays or goes, the Senators will be a team to watch this offseason as they look to build a contender in the competitive Atlantic Division.
