The NHL rumor mill is buzzing now that we are approaching the US Thanksgiving, and one name keeps popping up: Columbus Blue Jackets defenseman Ivan Provorov. TSN’s Pierre LeBrun recently reported that Provorov is generating significant interest around the league and could be the top rental defenseman available as the March 7th trade deadline approaches.
Provorov, 27, is set to become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season. While he hasn’t quite lived up to the lofty expectations that come with being a former top-10 draft pick, he’s consistently provided solid offensive production from the blue line with 30-plus points in multiple seasons. He’s a reliable workhorse who can log heavy minutes and contribute on both special teams units.
Ivan Provorov’s Potential Landing Spots
So, which teams might be in the market for Provorov’s services? Contenders looking to bolster their blue line for a Stanley Cup run will likely be lining up. Teams like the Edmonton Oilers, Toronto Maple Leafs, and New York Rangers could all use an experienced defenseman like Provorov.
The Blue Jackets are reportedly listening to offers but aren’t in a rush to move him. They’ll be looking for a significant return, with LeBrun suggesting a first-round pick as the likely asking price. However, the closer we get to the deadline, the more pressure the Blue Jackets will face to make a deal and avoid losing Provorov for nothing in free agency.
My Take:
While Provorov may not be a true number-one defenseman, he’s a valuable top-four option who can make a difference for a contending team. His ability to eat minutes, contribute offensively, and play in all situations makes him an attractive target. Don’t be surprised if a bidding war erupts for his services closer to the deadline.
This situation reminds me a bit of the David Savard trade a few years back. Savard, also a solid, dependable defenseman, was traded from Columbus to Tampa Bay at the deadline and played a key role in the Lightning’s Stanley Cup victory. Could Provorov be this year’s Savard? Only time will tell.
