As NHL free agency approaches on July 1, Ivan Provorov rumors are heating up. The 28-year-old defenseman is arguably one of the most intriguing names who could hit the open market this summer. While the Columbus Blue Jackets haven’t ruled out re-signing Provorov, the chances of him testing free agency remain strong—especially with the team in rebuild mode and Provorov seeking long-term stability.
Where Could Ivan Provorov Sign This Offseason?
1. Los Angeles Kings
Los Angeles may find itself in need of a left-shot defenseman if Vladislav Gavrikov walks in free agency. Provorov, who’s capable of playing both sides, would be an ideal replacement. His physical style and strong positional play align with the Kings’ defensive philosophy. Pairing him with a veteran like Drew Doughty or slotting him in a shutdown role could make LA’s blue line even more formidable.
2. Pittsburgh Penguins
The Penguins are entering a pivotal offseason. With an aging core and a disappointing 2024–25 season behind them, GM Kyle Dubas is expected to be aggressive. One area Pittsburgh needs to address is its blue line, which lacked consistency and offensive support. Ivan Provorov could slot into their top four and provide a two-way presence they desperately need. His ability to contribute on the power play would also be a major asset for a Penguins team that underperformed with the man advantage.
3. New York Islanders
The Islanders’ defensive unit took a step back this past season, and they could benefit from the addition of a more mobile, offensively-minded defenseman. Provorov fits the bill. With his puck-moving ability and strong skating, he could help transition the Isles’ game into a faster-paced style. Adding him to a group that already includes Noah Dobson and Ryan Pulock would give the Islanders a solid foundation on the back end.
