The Philadelphia Flyers have officially hired Rick Tocchet as their new head coach, confirming the rumors that had been swirling since early April. This marks a significant move in the Flyers’ ongoing rebuild as they look to re-establish themselves among the NHL’s top teams.
Rick Tocchet News continues to dominate headlines following his departure from Vancouver, where he guided the Canucks to a 50-win campaign and earned the Jack Adams Award as NHL Coach of the Year for the 2023–24 season. Despite the success, Tocchet chose not to re-sign with Vancouver after they missed the playoffs, leaving him open to new opportunities—like returning to his roots in Philadelphia.

Now 61, Tocchet brings a wealth of experience to a young Flyers squad. He previously coached the Tampa Bay Lightning and Arizona Coyotes and served as an assistant coach for the Pittsburgh Penguins during their Stanley Cup runs in 2016 and 2017. Tocchet is no stranger to the orange and black, having spent over a decade as a player in Philadelphia, bookending his NHL playing career with the Flyers.
“I couldn’t be more excited to lead this team back among the NHL elite where we belong,” Tocchet said during his introductory press conference. “We have a lot of work to do and much to accomplish, but I am confident in the direction we are heading and determined to get us there.”
Tocchet replaces John Tortorella, who was dismissed with nine games remaining in the regular season following an 11-loss skid in the final stretch. Interim coach Brad Shaw closed out the year, but the front office ultimately saw Tocchet as the ideal leader to push this group forward.
The Flyers are far removed from their last Stanley Cup Final appearance in 2010, and even further from their championships in 1974 and 1975. With Tocchet at the helm, the Flyers are signaling a renewed commitment to winning—and reconnecting with their rich hockey heritage.
