tag/tyson-barriewThe Calgary Flames have bolstered their blue line with the addition of veteran defenseman Tyson Barrie, signing him to a one-year, $1.25 million contract. This move comes after Barrie impressed the Flames’ brass during training camp while on a professional tryout agreement (PTO).
Barrie, 33, brings a wealth of experience to the Flames, having played over 800 NHL games with the Colorado Avalanche, Toronto Maple Leafs, Edmonton Oilers, and Nashville Predators. Known for his offensive instincts and puck-moving abilities, Barrie has consistently produced throughout his career, surpassing the 40-point mark five times.
Veteran Defenseman Joins Calgary After Successful PTO
Last season with the Predators, Barrie’s production dipped slightly, registering 1 goal and 14 assists in 41 games. This dip likely contributed to him hitting the free-agent market and ultimately accepting a PTO with the Flames. However, Barrie’s strong preseason performance, which included three assists in four games, proved he still has plenty to offer.
This signing is a shrewd move by Flames General Manager Craig Conroy. Barrie provides valuable depth on the right side and brings a veteran presence to a relatively young defensive core. He also has a familiarity with Head Coach Ryan Huska, having played for him in the WHL with the Kelowna Rockets. This existing relationship could be instrumental in helping Barrie seamlessly integrate into the Flames’ system.
While Barrie may not be the same offensive force he was in his prime, he still possesses the skills and hockey IQ to be a valuable contributor. His ability to quarterback a power play and facilitate zone exits will be an asset to the Flames. Furthermore, his one-year contract carries minimal risk, providing flexibility for the Flames moving forward.
This signing is a testament to Barrie’s determination and work ethic. Many veterans would shy away from a PTO, but Barrie embraced the opportunity and earned himself a contract. It will be interesting to see how he performs in Calgary and whether he can recapture his offensive form.
