The Buffalo Sabres have made a notable front office addition by hiring former NHL forward Eric Staal as special assistant to general manager Kevyn Adams. This appointment marks the return of a respected veteran who, despite a brief stint as a player with the Sabres during the 2020-21 season, left a lasting impression on the organization.
Staal Brings Championship Pedigree and Leadership to Sabres’ Hockey Operations
Staal’s new role is wide-ranging—he will assist in hockey operations, player development, and both amateur and professional scouting. His experience as a player will provide a valuable lens through which to evaluate talent and support team-building strategies.
Adams, who has remained aggressive in shaping the future of the Sabres, praised Staal’s influence and vision. “Eric was one of the first people I thought of when I became GM. His experience, leadership, and championship background make him a perfect fit for what we’re building here.”
Staal, 40, brings with him an illustrious résumé. Over 18 NHL seasons, he racked up 1,063 points in 1,365 games and won the Stanley Cup in 2006 with the Carolina Hurricanes. A member of the prestigious Triple Gold Club, Staal also captured an Olympic gold medal in 2010 and a World Championship in 2007—making him one of hockey’s most accomplished individuals.
Though his time playing in Buffalo was short, Staal expressed admiration for the organization. “I loved my time in Buffalo,” Staal said. “I’m grateful to be back and I hope to pass on some of my experiences to help this group grow.”
From a hockey operations standpoint, this move signals that Buffalo is doubling down on leadership and experience as they push to end their 14-year playoff drought. With a promising young core and a front office loaded with hockey IQ, Staal’s influence could be a turning point.
