The Elias Pettersson trade rumors connecting the Vancouver Canucks and Los Angeles Kings aren’t dead after all. But the most interesting part of the latest report isn’t that a trade is imminent. It’s that Los Angeles apparently had legitimate interest before, and could come back if Vancouver’s price changes.
NHL insider David Pagnotta discussed Pettersson on Sekeres & Price Podcast and confirmed that the Kings’ previous interest was genuine. His assessment of what could happen next was even more intriguing: “If the price drops and the opportunity is there… Ken Holland and company would pounce on that.” Pagnotta added simply, “The interest was real.”
That’s an important distinction.
There is currently no credible report saying the Los Angeles Kings and Vancouver Canucks are actively negotiating an Elias Pettersson trade. What we now have is confirmation that Los Angeles has looked seriously at Pettersson before and may have reason to revisit the situation if the economics become more favourable.
And in my view, that makes Pettersson one of the most fascinating NHL trade-rumor names to watch entering the 2026-27 season.
Why the Los Angeles Kings Could Revisit an Elias Pettersson Trade
Pettersson is coming off a season that did little to improve his trade value.
The 27-year-old recorded 15 goals and 36 assists for 51 points in 74 games for Vancouver, just 0.69 points per game. Those numbers are difficult to reconcile with an $11.6-million cap hit, especially for an acquiring team that would be committing to Pettersson through the 2031-32 season.
That’s also what makes this situation so unusual.
Pettersson isn’t an aging veteran whose best hockey is clearly behind him. He’s still young enough that another organization could reasonably believe it can unlock the high-end offensive player Vancouver has seen before.
For the Kings, that possibility is particularly tempting.
Pagnotta indicated Los Angeles is prepared to experiment with Adrian Kempe at center while Quinton Byfield occupies another major role down the middle. But if the Kings ultimately decide they still need a true high-end center, there aren’t many potentially available players with Pettersson’s offensive ceiling.
The question is whether Los Angeles would be buying a distressed asset, or inheriting a distressed contract.
The Salary-Cap Problem Facing an Elias Pettersson-to-Kings Trade
This is where the rumor becomes much more complicated.
According to current PuckPedia projections, Los Angeles has approximately $1.775 million in 2026-27 cap space. Pettersson carries an $11.6 million cap hit.
That means, using today’s projected roster, Los Angeles would need to remove approximately $9.825 million in net cap commitments just to absorb Pettersson’s entire cap hit without Vancouver retaining salary.
Elias Pettersson → Los Angeles Kings?
This is why I don’t believe a Pettersson trade is as simple as the Kings deciding Vancouver’s asking price has dropped.
The Canucks also have to like the contracts coming back.
If Los Angeles sends substantial salary to Vancouver simply to make the numbers work, the quality of the futures going to the Canucks would have to compensate Vancouver for taking those commitments.
There is another wrinkle worth watching.
We project the LA Kings with more than $36 million in 2027-28 cap space, although that figure will obviously change as the Kings make future signings. Structurally, however, Pettersson becomes considerably easier for Los Angeles to accommodate beyond this season.
That creates an interesting race between Pettersson’s trade value and the Kings’ cap flexibility.
If Vancouver successfully rebuilds his confidence and Pettersson returns to point-per-game territory, Los Angeles may have more room to acquire him, but the Canucks would also have significantly more leverage.
If Pettersson struggles again, his acquisition cost could decline while the $11.6-million contract becomes increasingly difficult to justify.
That’s the real story.

This isn’t intended to represent an NHL team’s internal valuation. It’s my own model balancing six factors: offensive ceiling, current production, positional scarcity, contract efficiency, age and remaining term, and trade flexibility.
Pettersson scores extremely well for offensive upside and positional value. His biggest deductions come from his recent production, the size and length of his contract and, critically, his control over the process through his no-movement protection.
That leaves Vancouver in an uncomfortable spot.
Selling Pettersson now could mean moving one of the organization’s most naturally talented players at arguably his lowest value.
Holding him comes with risk too. Another 50-point season would make it even harder to convince another general manager to take on more than $11 million annually without Vancouver accepting a compromised return.
Personally, I’d hold.
The Canucks appear focused on rebuilding Pettersson’s game rather than dumping his contract, with Pagnotta reporting that Daniel and Henrik Sedin have been involved in the effort to help get him back toward point-per-game production.
That’s the correct approach.
An Earlier Kings Report May Have Been Right Too
Earlier speculation surrounding Pettersson and Los Angeles had been cooled by Rick Dhaliwal, who said a Pettersson trade had not been close for months. He also explained that Pettersson spending time and training in Los Angeles should not automatically be interpreted as evidence of a coming Kings trade.
Pagnotta’s latest information doesn’t actually contradict that report.
Both can be true.
The Kings can have had legitimate interest while the two organizations were never close to completing a deal.
That’s why I would not interpret this latest development as evidence that Pettersson is about to become a Los Angeles King. Instead, it confirms something potentially more important for the longer-term NHL trade market:
Los Angeles appears to be a credible Pettersson destination if Vancouver eventually decides to move him and the acquisition price becomes attractive enough.
That is a storyline worth watching closely.
