Alex Tuch celebrating a goal with the Edmonton Oilers logo to the left signifying the NHL trade rumor
Rumors are swirling about Alex Tuch joining the Edmonton Oilers, but a deep dive into their salary cap situation reveals why this trade is a long shot.

The chatter is heating up around the NHL, and the latest buzz has Buffalo Sabres’ power forward Alex Tuch squarely in the sights of the Edmonton Oilers. On the surface, it’s a match made in hockey heaven. The Oilers are in full-blown “win-now” mode, desperately seeking to capitalize on the prime years of Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl.

Tuch, a dynamic, top-line winger with size, skill, and a proven scoring touch, seems like the perfect addition to bolster their top-six and provide the secondary scoring punch they desperately need for a deep playoff run. With the Sabres once again looking like they’re on the outside looking in, the logic of moving a pending free agent like Tuch for future assets is sound. But as tantalizing as the prospect of Tuch in an Oilers uniform is, the reality of the situation paints a much different, and far more complicated, picture.

The Harsh Reality of the Salary Cap

As an analyst who has seen countless blockbuster trades fall apart at the financial seams, I have to pour some cold water on this rumor. While the on-ice fit is undeniable, the numbers just don’t add up for the Oilers right now. As insider David Staples correctly points out, Edmonton is pressed right up against the $95.5 million salary cap. General Manager Stan Bowman has virtually no wiggle room to absorb a significant contract like Tuch’s without sending significant salary back the other way.

Looking at the Oilers’ roster, the options for a salary dump are slim to none. Their high-impact players, the ones a team like Buffalo would want in return, are either untouchable (like Evan Bouchard) or have no-trade clauses. This leaves Brett Kulak as one of the only moveable assets with a contract over $2 million without trade protection. With all due respect to Kulak, he’s not the centerpiece of a trade for a player of Tuch’s caliber. Compounding the issue is a depleted stock of high-end draft picks, with only their 2027 first-rounder available as a premium trade chip.

A Summer Splash More Likely

The truth is, the Oilers’ best chance to make a significant roster addition will come next summer. With more cap flexibility on the horizon, they will be in a much better position to be players in the unrestricted free agent market or to orchestrate a trade without being in a financial straitjacket. For now, Oilers fans will have to temper their expectations. The dream of Alex Tuch riding shotgun with McDavid or Draisaitl is likely to remain just that—a dream.
