The Dylan Larkin trade rumors that dominated the beginning of the NHL offseason never actually went away. Now, with September approaching, they may be about to become uncomfortable again for the Detroit Red Wings.
Elliotte Friedman, who originally reported on June 5 that Larkin had requested a trade, was recently asked whether that request still stands. His response on 32 Thoughts was significant: “I think it does for now.” Friedman added that the situation could depend on what Detroit’s eventual new general manager says and how Larkin responds.
That changes the conversation.
This is no longer simply an old offseason rumor that Detroit managed to ride out. The Red Wings are heading toward training camp without the Larkin situation resolved and while simultaneously searching for the person who will ultimately chart the franchise’s hockey direction.
For me, that is where the pressure really begins. Detroit doesn’t necessarily need to trade Larkin tomorrow. But the longer this remains unresolved, the more difficult it becomes to pretend the captain’s future isn’t the biggest question hanging over the organization.
Why the Detroit Red Wings Face a Dylan Larkin Deadline
There isn’t an official deadline for the Detroit Red Wings to make a Dylan Larkin trade.
There is, however, a practical one.
Training camp changes everything.
Once Larkin is back in the room, reporters will ask him about his future. Teammates will be asked about it. The new coaching season begins with the captain’s status potentially overshadowing almost everything happening on the ice.
Detroit is also operating through an unusual leadership transition.
Steve Yzerman moved out of the GM role in July and into a senior-adviser position, and the Red Wings began searching for their next hockey operations leader. That process is still generating candidates, including San Jose Sharks assistant GM Jeff Kealty.
Whoever takes over isn’t simply inheriting a roster.
They’re potentially inheriting the most important Detroit Red Wings trade decision in years.
And Friedman’s comments leave open an intriguing possibility: could a new GM convince Larkin to reconsider?
That’s why I wouldn’t describe a trade as inevitable yet.
A new hockey boss could sit down with Larkin, explain a different vision and attempt to repair whatever damage led to the original request. But if that conversation doesn’t change Larkin’s position, the new GM could quickly arrive at the opposite conclusion: the best way forward is maximizing his value while the market still sees a legitimate first-line center under long-term control.
Dylan Larkin’s Contract Gives Detroit Value, But Not Full Control
This is where the Larkin situation gets particularly interesting.
Larkin carries an $8.7 million cap hit through 2030-31. He produced 34 goals and 67 points in 74 games last season, and Sportsnet noted earlier this summer that he has now scored at least 30 goals in five consecutive seasons.
Under the NHL’s $104 million salary cap for 2026-27, Larkin’s $8.7 million hit consumes only 8.37% of the ceiling.
That matters.
When Larkin signed his contract in 2023, his cap hit represented roughly 10.42% of the ceiling. As the NHL cap rises while Larkin’s AAV stays frozen, the contract becomes easier for contenders to absorb relative to overall payroll.
The complication is his trade protection.
Larkin has a full no-trade clause at this stage of the contract, meaning Detroit cannot simply auction him to the highest bidder. His clause eventually becomes modified later in the deal.
Reports initially identified Minnesota, Florida and Vegas as his preferred destinations. Dallas subsequently emerged as another team Larkin could reportedly approve.
That’s an incredibly important distinction.
Detroit may possess an extremely valuable player, but Larkin controls which markets Detroit can seriously engage.
My Dylan Larkin Trade Value Model
If I’m evaluating Larkin strictly as a trade asset, I still see elite value.
This is my own NHLTradeRumor.com trade-value model, not information attributed to the Red Wings or another NHL club.
My biggest deduction isn’t Larkin’s age or production.
It’s Detroit’s negotiating leverage.
An established center producing around a point per game, scoring 30-plus goals annually and carrying a declining percentage of the salary cap should command an enormous return.
But when the player can effectively decide which teams are allowed to bid, the seller doesn’t get a normal open-market auction.
That may explain why this has taken so long.
The Numbers Still Support Larkin’s Value
Larkin recorded 34 goals, 33 assists and 67 points in 74 games in 2025-26, good for approximately 0.91 points per game. His career rate is approximately 0.80 points per game.
That’s roughly a 14% improvement over his career scoring rate.

Has the Original Dylan Larkin Trade Report Been Confirmed?
This is one of the more important developments in the story.
Friedman originally reported on June 5 that Larkin had requested a trade. Nearly three months later, instead of reporting that the issue had been resolved or withdrawn, Friedman said on August 25 that he believes the request “does for now” still stand.
In other words, the original report has held up.
What has changed is Detroit’s management structure.
Yzerman is no longer the general manager. A new hockey operations leader is coming. That creates one final pathway toward keeping Larkin that didn’t exist when the request initially became public.
But it also creates urgency.
My read is that Detroit should not make a panic trade simply to eliminate the distraction before camp. Larkin’s contract, production and positional value are too strong for that.
At the same time, dragging this deep into the regular season carries risk.
If Larkin genuinely believes his opportunity to compete for a Stanley Cup is better elsewhere, another meeting or another month probably doesn’t fundamentally change that calculation.
The Detroit Red Wings eventually need clarity.
And if Larkin’s trade request survives the arrival of a new GM, I believe the conversation changes from whether Detroit should trade its captain to how quickly it can find a package worthy of him.
That’s when the Dylan Larkin trade rumors could become something much more real.
