The Philadelphia Flyers may have found their next blockbuster target, and this one could address their biggest roster need.
After missing out on Kirill Marchenko, the Flyers are reportedly keeping tabs on Detroit Red Wings center Dylan Larkin. That is significant because Philadelphia has already shown a willingness to spend meaningful assets to acquire an impact forward, and Larkin arguably fits the Flyers better than another winger would.
There is one enormous obstacle: Philadelphia is not currently believed to be on Larkin’s approved list of destinations.
Daily Faceoff’s Anthony Di Marco reports that the Flyers have Larkin on their radar and would be willing to consider paying a similar three-asset price to what they were prepared to spend pursuing Marchenko. However, Larkin owns substantial control over his future through his contract protection, meaning Philadelphia cannot simply overwhelm Detroit with an offer and expect a deal to happen.
That makes this one of the more fascinating Dylan Larkin trade rumors to watch as the season begins: the Flyers have cap room, assets and a clear positional need. What they don’t have, at least yet, is Larkin’s approval.
Why Dylan Larkin Fits What the Philadelphia Flyers Are Missing
Philadelphia’s interest makes considerably more sense when you look beyond name recognition.
Larkin has remained remarkably consistent offensively. He produced 69 points in 68 games in 2023-24, followed by 70 points in 82 games in 2024-25 and 67 points in 74 games last season. In 2025-26 alone, Larkin scored 34 goals while averaging more than 20 minutes per game.
That’s legitimate top-six center production, and finding centers capable of scoring 30 goals while playing major minutes is considerably harder than finding another winger.
For the Flyers, that’s the attraction.
Trevor Zegras gives Philadelphia offensive creativity, while Travis Konecny, Matvei Michkov, Owen Tippett, Tyson Foerster and the organization’s younger talent give the Flyers options on the wings. Adding Larkin would potentially allow Philadelphia to construct its forward group from the middle outward rather than continuing to search for another winger.

This is where the Detroit Red Wings hold only part of the equation.
Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman recently reported that Larkin had expanded the group of destinations he would consider to roughly eight clubs. Colorado, Washington, Dallas and Tampa Bay were among the additional teams mentioned, joining previously reported possibilities including Minnesota, Florida and Vegas. Philadelphia, however, has not been reported among the approved destinations.
And despite Larkin opening the door to additional teams, TSN’s Chris Johnston reported Wednesday that there has been “no tangible progress” toward a trade.
That’s why I wouldn’t interpret the Flyers reporting as evidence that a deal is close.
My read is that Philadelphia is positioning itself to be ready if the market changes.
There is a major difference.
GM Danny Briere doesn’t need Larkin to approve Philadelphia today to keep evaluating what a Detroit trade would cost. If Larkin eventually becomes more flexible, or circumstances with one of his preferred teams fail to produce an acceptable Detroit offer, the Flyers want to understand exactly what it would take to enter the conversation.
And Philadelphia has something several of Larkin’s preferred destinations don’t have: comfortable salary-cap flexibility.

We currently list Philadelphia with approximately $12.45 million in projected cap space against the $104 million ceiling, while Larkin carries an $8.7 million cap hit through 2030-31.
That’s an important part of this rumor.
The salary cap isn’t really Philadelphia’s problem.
The problem is getting Larkin to say yes, and then getting Detroit to say yes to the return.
What Would the Detroit Red Wings Want for Dylan Larkin?
Daily Faceoff reported that Philadelphia had been prepared to build a three-asset package around Alex Bump, Noah Cates and a first-round pick during its pursuit of Marchenko. Those players were not reported as being actively shopped, and that specific package has not been reported as an offer for Larkin.
Di Marco did report that the Flyers could consider a similar three-asset price for Larkin.
That’s where I think negotiations would become complicated.
If Detroit decides it needs established NHL talent rather than primarily futures, the Red Wings could push Philadelphia toward players such as Tyson Foerster or Owen Tippett. Daily Faceoff reported there isn’t a sense that the Flyers want to move either player, which makes a straightforward hockey trade considerably tougher.
A Bump-Cates-first style package gives Detroit youth, an established NHL forward and a premium future asset. But Larkin is a productive center signed long-term at a cap number that should become increasingly manageable as the NHL ceiling rises.
Detroit would have every reason to demand substantial value.

Why Philadelphia Should Keep Watching
What I find most interesting about the Philadelphia Flyers–Dylan Larkin connection isn’t whether a trade happens this week.
It’s that Philadelphia appears prepared for the moment when the market changes.
The Flyers took a major swing at Leo Carlsson. They explored Marchenko. Now they’re keeping tabs on Larkin. That pattern suggests Briere is not merely looking for incremental roster improvement; Philadelphia appears willing to investigate opportunities to add high-end talent when those players become available. Daily Faceoff reported that team sources described the Flyers as looking to improve and suggested there is some urgency to make a significant addition, although no deal is imminent.
Larkin would also solve a more difficult problem than Marchenko would have.
Elite wingers are valuable, but legitimate top-six centers who can score 30 goals, handle difficult minutes and contribute on special teams rarely become obtainable while signed through multiple seasons.
That’s why this rumor deserves attention.
Philadelphia doesn’t control the next move.
Dylan Larkin does.
If the former Detroit Red Wings captain eventually opens the door to Philadelphia, the Flyers possess the cap flexibility and trade assets to make the conversation serious very quickly.
Until that happens, this remains a developing NHL trade rumor rather than evidence of an impending blockbuster.
But Philadelphia appears to be making sure it is ready if that door finally opens.
