One of the NHL’s most fascinating unresolved trade situations suddenly has a Montreal Canadiens angle, and this one deserves more attention than the average offseason rumor.
TSN’s Bryan Hayes has identified Dylan Larkin and the Montreal Canadiens as a combination that makes sense, with Frankie Corrado agreeing with the potential fit. Hayes’ argument is easy to understand: put Larkin behind Nick Suzuki, surround those two centers with Montreal’s talented young wingers, and suddenly the Canadiens have the type of strength down the middle that becomes extremely difficult to handle in a playoff series.
“I’ve said all along, Larkin to Montreal is what makes sense,” Hayes said during the discussion. But he also identified the enormous complication: Larkin would have to become open to Montreal.
That distinction matters.
There is no credible report that the Detroit Red Wings and Canadiens are currently negotiating a Larkin trade. What exists right now is a compelling hockey fit involving a star player who has already asked Detroit for a trade, and whose contract gives him enormous control over where he goes.
Why a Dylan Larkin Trade to the Montreal Canadiens Makes So Much Sense
The attraction from Montreal’s perspective is obvious.
Larkin produced 34 goals and 33 assists for 67 points in 74 games last season. At 30 years old, he remains a legitimate top-six NHL center capable of playing significant minutes, contributing on special teams and attacking with speed through the middle of the ice. He has 643 points in 808 career NHL games.
Put him into a Canadiens lineup that already features Suzuki, Cole Caufield, Juraj Slafkovsky and Ivan Demidov and Montreal would no longer be hoping someone develops into an impact second-line center. They would have one.
That is what makes this rumor interesting to me.
My read: Montreal has reached the stage of its roster build where another prospect isn’t necessarily more valuable than an established impact player. There comes a point when accumulating young assets has to turn into acquiring players who can help you win meaningful games. Larkin would represent exactly that kind of move.
His contract also isn’t nearly as frightening as it might first appear.
Larkin carries an $8.7 million cap hit through the 2030-31 season. Montreal currently projects to have $9,783,924 in 2026-27 cap space against the $104 million ceiling. That means, mathematically, the Canadiens could add Larkin’s entire cap hit today and remain approximately $1,083,924 under the ceiling before accounting for any salary leaving Montreal in the transaction.

There is another important internal comparison. Larkin’s $8.7 million cap hit would not destroy Montreal’s salary hierarchy. Noah Dobson carries a $9.5 million hit, Lane Hutson is at $8.85 million, Suzuki is at $7.875 million and Caufield is at $7.85 million.
That makes Larkin expensive, but not structurally out of place.
Dylan Larkin Controls Whether Montreal Can Become a Real Trade Option
This is where the rumor becomes far more complicated.
Larkin has a full no-trade clause for 2026-27, meaning Detroit cannot simply find the highest bidder and send him there. Earlier reporting identified the Florida Panthers, Minnesota Wild and Vegas Golden Knights as the three teams on Larkin’s preferred list. Montreal was not included.
That is currently the biggest obstacle to this entire scenario.
Larkin requested a trade following another season in which Detroit missed the playoffs, and former Red Wings GM Steve Yzerman publicly confirmed in June that Larkin’s agent had informed the club that the captain wanted to be moved.
Since then, Detroit’s front office has undergone a dramatic change. Yzerman transitioned out of the general manager role on July 15, with the organization launching a search for its next hockey operations leader. That uncertainty only adds another layer to the Larkin situation.
From Detroit’s perspective, trading its captain to an Atlantic Division rival shouldn’t happen cheaply.
And that’s where I believe Montreal would have to make a decision: Are the Canadiens prepared to pay for certainty rather than wait for one of their young centers to develop?
My answer would depend heavily on Detroit’s demand.
I would not empty Montreal’s prospect system for a 30-year-old center, particularly when Larkin’s trade request and no-trade clause reduce Detroit’s negotiating leverage. But if Kent Hughes can build a deal around one premium young asset or prospect, a first-round pick and secondary value, that is a conversation worth having.

Where the Dylan Larkin Trade Rumors Stand Now
As of August 26, 2026, there has been no confirmation that Montreal has entered actual Dylan Larkin trade negotiations with the Detroit Red Wings.
That means Hayes’ comments should be treated exactly as they were presented: an analyst identifying Montreal as an excellent potential fit, not an insider reporting that a trade is imminent.
Still, this is a rumor worth following because the ingredients are unusually believable.
Montreal needs another high-end center. The Canadiens have the cap space. They possess the assets to pursue a major trade. Larkin wants a chance to win. And Detroit eventually has to decide how it will handle a franchise captain who has requested to leave.
Everything works, except for the most important piece.
Dylan Larkin has to say yes.
