The Boston Bruins may have found the perfect solution to their biggest roster weakness, but there is one significant problem: Dylan Larkin would have to want to come to Boston.
The Detroit Red Wings captain remains one of the biggest names hanging over the NHL trade market after requesting a move out of Detroit. Red Wings general manager Steve Yzerman has publicly confirmed that Larkin’s agent informed the organization he wanted to be traded and subsequently supplied Detroit with a short list of teams for which Larkin would waive his no-trade protection.
Boston reportedly isn’t on that list.
That hasn’t stopped speculation that Bruins GM Don Sweeney should pick up the phone. Adam Proteau of The Hockey News believes Boston needs a significant upgrade down the middle and suggested Sweeney should attempt to convince Larkin and his camp that the Bruins could be the destination he is looking for.
And from my perspective, Sweeney would be making a mistake if he didn’t at least explore it.
Why Dylan Larkin Makes So Much Sense for the Boston Bruins
This isn’t about the Bruins desperately chasing a recognizable name.
Larkin fills an actual roster need.
Boston’s current center depth includes Pavel Zacha, Elias Lindholm, Fraser Minten and Sean Kuraly. Zacha is coming off an excellent 30-goal, 65-point season, but adding Larkin would allow Boston to move everyone down the lineup and create a much more dangerous group through the middle.

That’s the type of combination that could immediately alter how opposing teams defend Boston.
Larkin scored 34 goals and 33 assists for 67 points in 74 games with the Detroit Red Wings last season. He also averaged more than three minutes of power-play time per game and has recorded 643 points through 808 career NHL games.

Those numbers matter, but his skating is what intrigues me most about a Boston fit. Larkin gives the Bruins something they’re missing down the middle: a center capable of attacking defenders with speed, carrying the puck through the neutral zone and creating offense instead of relying almost entirely on his wingers to generate it.
The Biggest Dylan Larkin Trade Obstacle Isn’t Detroit — It’s Larkin
Here’s where this rumor gets interesting.
Boston can put together trade proposals all day long, but Larkin controls the process.
His contract carries full no-movement protection, meaning the Red Wings can’t simply trade their captain to whichever organization submits the best offer. Yzerman confirmed that Larkin supplied Detroit with only a short list of acceptable destinations. Boston has previously been reported as not being among those teams.
That’s why Sweeney’s first call might not actually be about trade compensation.
It should be about permission.
If Detroit allows Boston to speak with Larkin’s representation, the Bruins can make their case: Original Six franchise, David Pastrnak, Jeremy Swayman, Charlie McAvoy, playoff expectations and an opportunity to immediately become Boston’s No. 1 center.
Would that be enough?
Nobody outside Larkin’s camp knows.
But Boston only needs him to change his answer once.
My Boston Bruins Salary-Cap Calculation for a Larkin Trade
Here’s another part of this rumor that deserves more attention.
PuckPedia currently projects the Bruins at approximately $5.39 million in cap space, while Larkin carries an $8.7 million cap hit through the 2030-31 season.
My calculation:
$8,700,000 Larkin cap hit – $5,390,417 Boston cap space = $3,309,583
So, based on Boston’s current projected cap position, the Bruins would need to clear approximately $3.31 million just to absorb Larkin’s full cap hit.
That doesn’t make a trade impossible. It simply means salary likely has to leave Boston as part of the deal or in a corresponding transaction.
Could Detroit retain salary? Technically, retention could change the equation dramatically, but asking the Red Wings to retain a meaningful percentage of an $8.7-million cap hit for five more seasons would substantially increase the acquisition price.
I wouldn’t expect Detroit to do Boston that favor cheaply.

Dylan Larkin remains a premium NHL trade asset because of his production, contract security and ability to play a true No. 1 center role. Using the NHLTradeRumor.com Trade Value Index, Larkin earns an 84/100 overall score, although his full no-movement clause gives him significant control over where he could be traded.
Trade Value Takeaway: An 84/100 score puts Larkin firmly in premium-asset territory. Detroit’s biggest disadvantage isn’t Larkin’s talent or contract — it’s his ability to control the destination, which could prevent Steve Yzerman from creating the kind of bidding war normally associated with a first-line center of this caliber.
The key here is that Larkin’s no-movement clause doesn’t make him less valuable on the ice. It makes Detroit’s negotiating environment more difficult.
If only a handful of teams can realistically bid, Yzerman can’t manufacture a traditional 15-team auction.
An Earlier Dylan Larkin Report Has Already Been Confirmed
There is another important credibility point surrounding this story.
When reports first surfaced in June that Larkin wanted out of Detroit, there was initially no public confirmation from Larkin, his agent or the Red Wings.
That changed June 27.
Yzerman publicly confirmed that Larkin’s agent had informed him that “Dylan would like to be traded” and later supplied Detroit with a short list of acceptable destinations. And the situation hasn’t simply disappeared during the quiet part of August.
That makes this much different from a random summer trade proposal.
The request itself is real.
The Boston part remains speculation.
Would I Make the Dylan Larkin Trade If I Were the Bruins?
Absolutely — within reason.
I wouldn’t gut Boston’s prospect pool and surrender multiple premium young players plus multiple first-round picks. But legitimate top-line centers rarely become available, and Larkin’s $8.7-million cap hit becomes increasingly reasonable as the NHL salary cap rises.
Boston currently owns multiple first-round selections over the next several drafts, giving Sweeney legitimate ammunition if he decides to chase an impact center.
For the Detroit Red Wings, the return has to reflect more than Larkin’s current production. Detroit would be trading its captain, longtime No. 1 center and one of the faces of the franchise.
For Boston, the question isn’t whether Larkin makes them better.
He unquestionably would.
The real question is whether Sweeney can convince Dylan Larkin himself that Boston gives him the opportunity he’s apparently searching for.
Until Larkin says yes, everything else is secondary.
