New Jersey Devils defenseman Dougie Hamilton looks to make a play, amid NHL trade rumors linking him to the Detroit Red Wings and Utah Mammoth.
Despite the New Jersey Devils' public stance, star defenseman Dougie Hamilton remains a prime target in offseason NHL trade rumors, with teams like the Detroit Red Wings and Utah Mammoth closely monitoring his availability.

If you’ve been paying attention to the rumors around the league, you already know that former New Jersey Devils GM Tom Fitzgerald has publicly downplayed the idea of shopping Dougie Hamilton. But let’s be honest: in the NHL, where there is smoke, there is usually a very complex, cap-clearing fire. Despite the PR spin, the 32-year-old right-shot defenseman remains one of the hottest names in the rumor mill as we inch closer to the offseason. The reality of a flat-cap era means his hefty $9 million AAV through the 2027-28 season coupled with a partial no-trade clause, makes any transaction a massive logistical headache. Yet, elite offensive defensemen don’t hit the market often, and a few ambitious teams have heavily kicked the tires.

I’ve watched Hamilton’s deployment under the Devils’ system, and while his offensive metrics remain elite, the team’s cap structure is demanding flexibility. Enter two drastically different franchises with identical needs: the Utah Mammoth and the Detroit Red Wings. Both are desperate for a top-tier power-play quarterback, but they approach the negotiation table with entirely different assets.

The Detroit Red Wings’ Desperate Push for a Right-Handed Anchor

Detroit has been consistently linked to Dougie Hamilton as GM Steve Yzerman looks to stabilize the team’s blue line and finally push the Red Wings into serious, deep playoff contention for next season. If you look at Detroit’s current defensive matrix, they are actively hunting for a reliable, top-tier right-handed defenseman who can log heavy minutes against elite competition this offseason.

From my perspective, the fit is undeniable. Hamilton’s size, offensive instincts, and veteran experience would immediately bolster Detroit’s defensive structure. More importantly, bringing in an established anchor like Hamilton would take the immediate, crushing pressure off Detroit’s younger defensive prospects, specifically Axel Sandin-Pellikka. Letting a high-ceiling prospect develop in a sheltered, second-pairing role rather than throwing him to the wolves on the top pair is exactly the kind of patient roster management Yzerman prefers.

Why the Utah Mammoth Could Afford the $9 Million Price Tag

While Detroit offers a traditional hockey market, the Utah Mammoth have quietly emerged as one of the most logical destinations for Hamilton due to their unique roster needs and rare financial flexibility. Utah is a playoff team currently being held back by a distinct lack of depth scoring and a power play that goes cold at the worst possible times. Hamilton’s offensive acumen would make him a natural, plug-and-play quarterback for their first power-play unit (PP1).

Unlike the tight cap situations of like the Toronto Maple Leafs, Utah actually has the cap space to absorb Hamilton’s steep $9 million AAV. They have significant money coming off the books this summer and no massive restricted free-agent contracts to negotiate immediately. This gives them immense leverage; they are one of the few teams that could acquire Hamilton without requiring the New Jersey Devils to retain a massive, prohibitive chunk of his salary.
