The New Jersey Devils sent shockwaves through the NHL today by firing head coach Lindy Ruff and promoting assistant Travis Green to interim head coach. The move comes as the Devils find themselves floundering on the outside of the playoff picture.
Ruff had just been given a multi-year contract extension this past fall following the Devils’ first playoff berth in his first three seasons. However, the team has underperformed this year and currently sits eight points out of a wild-card spot. Ruff finishes his Devils career with a 128-125-38 record.
NHL Rumors: Jacob Markstrom headed to the New Jersey Devils?
Can Travis Green Revive the Devils’ Season?
Green steps in with significant NHL coaching experience. He helmed the Vancouver Canucks for over four seasons, compiling a 133-147-34 record during his time with the team.
The Devils will now look to Green to galvanize the team and push them towards an unlikely playoff run. The pressure is on, as New Jersey can ill-afford to miss the playoffs as they continue their promising rebuild.
