Detroit Red Wings celebrating a win, will they make some big moves in free agency?
Detroit Red Wings rumors suggest GM Steve Yzerman will avoid big spending this offseason and target key depth additions instead.

The Detroit Red Wings’ offseason is shaping up to be strategic rather than sensational. After a disappointing finish that extended the franchise’s playoff drought to nine consecutive seasons—six under general manager Steve Yzerman—the organization is feeling the heat. Expectations were high in Hockeytown, but the Red Wings were leapfrogged in the standings by divisional rivals like the Ottawa Senators and Montreal Canadiens.

Red Wings May Prioritize Value Over Splash in Free Agency

Despite growing frustration among fans, don’t expect Detroit to open the vault when free agency begins on July 1. According to Red Wings insider Max Bultman of The Athletic, Yzerman may look to be aggressive—but not in the way many fans are hoping. Rather than throwing $10-13 million contracts at marquee free agents (Mitch Marner), Detroit may target smart, calculated additions to improve their depth and compete in a grueling Atlantic Division.

One area of focus is the blue line. Bultman specifically names Los Angeles Kings defenseman Vladislav Gavrikov as an ideal fit—someone who could help stabilize the back end with his physical, shutdown style. While Gavrikov wouldn’t be cheap, he’d fill a critical need that’s plagued Detroit for years.

Up front, Bultman speculates that the Red Wings could take a swing at a forward—possibly Sam Bennett, Brock Boeser, or Nikolaj Ehlers. However, with cap constraints and internal development still a top priority, Detroit is unlikely to bring in more than one significant name. The front office appears more interested in taking incremental steps forward, rather than risking the kind of long-term cap headaches that come with bold free agent splurges.

As someone who’s followed Yzerman’s managerial style closely, this approach aligns with his patient, build-through-drafting philosophy. He’s not one to chase headlines—he’s chasing sustainable success.
