Detroit Red Wings general manager Steve Yzerman looks concerned at a game.
Could the Red Wings pursue Markstrom or Ullmark? Latest NHL trade rumors and analysis on Detroit's goaltending situation.

The Detroit Red Wings’ goaltending situation this season has left a lot to be desired. Ville Husso has struggled to stay healthy and his save percentage (.892) is far from what was expected. Alex Lyon, while logging considerable minutes, boasts just a .906 save percentage. It leaves General Manager Steve Yzerman to contemplate his team’s future between the pipes.

The Wings could roll with the same tandem and focus on upgrading their defense. However, it’s tempting to consider chasing a true number-one netminder this offseason.

Could the Red Wings Shake Up Their Goalie Tandem?

Names like Calgary’s Jacob Markstrom or Boston’s Linus Ullmark have been floated around. Both goalies boast star-caliber seasons, but acquiring either would likely mean moving Husso’s hefty $4.75 million cap hit.

Even if Markstrom or Ullmark were open to a Detroit move, Yzerman could find their price tag too rich for his blood. The free-agent market for goaltending this summer is underwhelming. That might push Yzerman towards bolstering the defense corps and hoping that lessens the strain on Husso and Lyon.
