Could this jersey swap become a reality? A digital concept showing Robert Thomas in a Chicago Blackhawks uniform as summer trade rumors swirl regarding a potential blockbuster deal with the St. Louis Blues.

General Manager Kyle Davidson has methodically stockpiled one of the most impressive war chests in the National Hockey League. With an arsenal of draft capital, including three first-round picks in the 2027 NHL Draft, the rebuilding Chicago Blackhawks are eventually going to transition from accumulating assets to aggressively acquiring established elite talent.

If Chicago fails to secure the top spot in the upcoming draft lottery, or if high-end prospects like Roman Kantserov need more development time, the Blackhawks might be forced to fast-track their top-six forward group through a massive trade. According to Scott Powers of The Athletic, a legitimate top-line center like Robert Thomas of the St. Louis Blues fits the exact profile Chicago needs to insulate their young core.

But intra-division trades of this magnitude are incredibly rare. To pry a 26-year-old, point-per-game, top-line center away from a bitter Central Division rival, it is going to take substantially more than just a pile of future draft picks. St. Louis GM Doug Armstrong would demand a king’s ransom of NHL-ready youth.

What the Chicago Blackhawks Must Offer the St. Louis Blues

Any time you try to trade for a foundational piece who is locked up through the 2030-31 season at a highly manageable $8.125M AAV, the asking price will make you wince. For St. Louis to even pick up the phone, Chicago cannot just offer futures; they have to offer blue-chip prospects who project to be top-of-the-lineup difference-makers.

The conversation starts with Oliver Moore. You simply cannot acquire a number-one center without giving up a potential future top-six center in return. Moore’s game-breaking speed and elite hockey IQ make him one of the most highly touted prospects in Chicago’s system, and he would give the Blues an immediate injection of dynamic pace down the middle.

Alongside Moore, the Blues would absolutely demand a foundational piece for their blue line. Kevin Korchinski fits that bill perfectly. Korchinski already has NHL experience under his belt, and his offensive upside as a power-play quarterback is exactly what St. Louis is desperate for as they retool their defense. Package Moore, Korchinski, and an unprotected 2027 1st-Round Pick, and you finally have a trade package substantial enough to make Armstrong pause.

Will Robert Thomas Waive His NTC for Chicago?

The massive hurdle here isn’t just the trade package; it’s the player’s contract. Robert Thomas holds a full no-trade clause. While he was the frequent subject of trade speculation leading up to the NHL trade deadline, his post-deadline comments made it clear he loves playing in St. Louis.

For Thomas to green-light a trade to the Windy City, Davidson would have to sell him on a vision. If the Blackhawks can prove to Thomas that their rebuild is ending and they are genuinely on their way to being a perennial playoff team, the chance to play alongside generational talent could be the ultimate deciding factor in waiving his NTC.
