It appears the Vancouver Canucks might be looking to recapture some of last season’s magic. Elliotte Friedman recently reported on his “32 Thoughts” podcast that Canucks GM Patrik Allvin has reached out to the Boston Bruins about the availability of defenseman Nikita Zadorov. While the conversation was described as “brief,” the very fact that Allvin made the call is intriguing.
Zadorov, 29, became a fan favorite in Vancouver after arriving via trade from Calgary last season. His physical presence and veteran leadership were instrumental in the Canucks’ surprising playoff push. He then signed a six-year, $30 million contract with Boston in July, a deal that includes a full no-movement clause for this season.
Vancouver Canucks Defense in Need: Zadorov a Potential Solution?
So why the Canucks’ sudden interest? The injury to Filip Hronek has left a gaping hole on Vancouver’s blue line. Zadorov’s size, skating ability, and familiarity with the team make him an ideal candidate to fill that void.
Of course, prying Zadorov away from Boston won’t be easy. The Bruins are playoff contenders and unlikely to part with a key piece of their defense. The no-movement clause also gives Zadorov full control, meaning he’d have to waive it to return to Vancouver.
However, where there’s smoke, there’s fire. Allvin clearly sees Zadorov as a potential solution to the Canucks’ defensive woes. Whether or not a deal can be struck remains to be seen, but this is definitely a situation worth monitoring.
