As the Chicago Blackhawks look to build their future around Connor Bedard, their decision to select Artem Levshunov with the second overall pick in the 2024 NHL Draft is drawing increasing scrutiny. Levshunov, a promising defenseman, was seen as a cornerstone piece for Chicago’s blue line. However, Ivan Demidov’s electrifying rookie season in the KHL has sparked questions about whether the Blackhawks passed on a generational talent.
Ivan Demidov’s Historic Rookie Season Highlights the Blackhawks’ Draft Gamble
Demidov, drafted 5th overall by the Montreal Canadiens, is rewriting the KHL record books as a rookie. On pace to have the most productive rookie season in league history, the 18-year-old forward has shown elite skating, a lethal shot, and exceptional hockey IQ. Montreal fans are already buzzing with excitement as Demidov is expected to make his NHL debut next season.
Boston Bruins defenseman Nikita Zadorov, a fellow Russian, recently weighed in on the debate. “His skill set is so elite that I’m surprised he fell to fifth place in the draft,” Zadorov said. “His skating, shooting, and hockey IQ – it’s really fun to watch him go.” Zadorov’s comments underscore the belief that Demidov’s talent should never have been available by the time the Canadiens made their selection.
The Blackhawks’ choice to draft Levshunov was undoubtedly a calculated move to address a pressing need on defense. Yet, Zadorov argues that passing on Demidov may have been a misstep. “Ivan is such a media-friendly, nice guy,” he added. “I think he’ll fit perfectly in Montreal. It’s a good place for him. They’ll develop him well, and the fans will instantly love him.”
Levshunov, while talented, has not yet demonstrated the immediate impact Demidov is having overseas. The Blackhawks may still benefit from Levshunov’s defensive prowess in the long term, but Demidov’s KHL dominance suggests Chicago might regret their decision.
