The Anaheim Ducks are in the midst of a youth movement, and one of the cornerstones of their future frontline could very well be the imposing figure of Nathan Gaucher. A first-round pick in the 2022 NHL Entry Draft, Gaucher brings a tantalizing combination of size, skill, and grit to the table. As he continues to develop, the question on everyone’s mind is just how impactful he can be at the NHL level.
The Tools for Success
From a pure physical standpoint, Gaucher has all the makings of a prototypical power forward. Standing at 6-foot-3 and tipping the scales at over 200 pounds, he has the frame to be a dominant force in the dirty areas of the ice. His work along the boards and in front of the net is already a known strength, using his size to create space and generate high-danger scoring chances. He’s a responsible two-way player, a trait that was on full display during his time with the Quebec Remparts in the QMJHL and his multiple appearances with Team Canada at the World Junior Championships.
Areas for Growth
The primary area of development for Gaucher lies in his skating. While he possesses decent straight-line speed for a player of his stature, his agility and acceleration will need to improve to keep pace with the speed of the NHL game. Unlocking that next gear in his skating will be the key to him becoming a truly dominant force, allowing him to more effectively carry the puck through the neutral zone and close in on defenders with menacing speed. As he continues to refine his game with the San Diego Gulls in the AHL, focusing on this aspect will be paramount to his success.
As Gaucher matures, the expectation is that he will evolve into a formidable third-line center who can shut down the opposition’s top players while contributing offensively. His unique blend of size and defensive acumen makes him a valuable asset for a Ducks team on the rise.
